Haydock 13:15 – Ciceros Gift
Charlie Hills’ four year-old CICEROS GIFT seems to either win or finish seventh as they’re the only positions he occupied in his five career starts to date. We can write off his last run at Goodwood (finished seventh) as the ground was very quick. He’s better with some give in the ground and he’ll hopefully get that at Haydock. If he shows his best – he’ll go close.
Ascot 13:35 – The Wizard Of Eye & Mission To Moon (each-way)
The going at Ascot is likely to be very soft on Saturday as a lot of rain is forecast. That tempers my enthusiasm for THE WIZARD OF EYE a little who was very impressive when winning at this track in May over this 7f trip. He got caught flat-footed over 6f last time at the Royal meeting but the extra furlong and a return to handicap company will play to his strengths. MISSION TO MOON will handle any softening of the he ground as an alternative.
Haydock 13:50 – Road To Wembley (each-way)
A 1m 6f handicap where ROAD TO WEMBLEY has an each-way chance against Master Builder, who looks the one to beat. He’s got a good pedigree and could be a triple-digit performer in time. He’s won over 2m at Newcastle on the all-weather and is unexposed on the turf.
Ascot 14:10 – Solomon (NAP)
He hasn’t quite lived up to the hype but SOLOMON is worth another chance. The William Haggas yard is in better form and he won well at Haydock over 10f but then was beaten over 1m 4f at Ascot on Shergar Cup day. Callum Shepherd is reunited with him and that may help. He could still be well handicapped and is my best bet of the day.
Haydock 14:25 – Knightswood (each-way)
The Old Borough Cup over the same 1m 6f trip where KNIGHTSWOOD can make up for an unlucky run at Goodwood and was beaten less than two lengths in fifth. He didn’t stay 2m at York last time and is capable of hitting the places. Epic Poet looks the one to beat on his run at Goodwood but at the likely prices I’ll stick with Knightswood.
Kempton 14:35 – Kalpana
Hamish won this contest three years ago but KALPANA could be the improver in the field. She won very well at Hamilton last time and looks one to follow.
Haydock 15:00 – Jer Batt & Toca Madera
JERR BATT is one for the short-list providing the ground isn’t too fast by race time as for once there’s little rain forecast at Haydock. If you do see good to firm in the ground description, then TOCA MADERA looks a decent play.
Kempton 15:15 – Vultar (each-way)
There’s 14 runners declared so the draw may be important. VULTAR is drawn in stall six but had to wait for his fifth start to get off the mark on his handicap debut. His turf form isn’t the best but was second at this venue in the qualifier for this contest. A definite each-way chance at a nice price after declarations.
Haydock 15:35 – Elite Status
The feature race of the day is the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Cup over 6f where I reckon ELITE STATUS can cement his position as a Group 1 sprinter. He has his issues but comes in here unbeaten this season. He can take a major step forward and be bang there. Stablemate Swingalong deserves a change of luck after solid runs when second in the QEII Jubilee Stakes and the July Cup.
