14:40 Worcester – Sleeping Satellite

This looks a really tight-knit novices’ handicap chase with just the seven set to go to post and I could probably make out a good case for at least four of them. Top weight Next Left probably didn’t appreciate the soft ground last time out at Uttoxeter and back on a sounder surface surely has a bit more improvement in him at the very least on only his third start over the larger obstacles.

He could be the main danger to the selection SLEEPING SATELLITE who, like his rival, blew out last time out when running below expectations at Cartmel following a fair run also at Uttoxeter.

I’m not sure he didn’t act around the Lake District track that day, but more the view that he made a bad mistake at the 10th which made him lose all momentum and then he didn’t get home over the extra quarter mile. This more level track should play to his strengths and a mark of 109 with the multiple champion jockey on board looks very playable.

‌15:22 Brighton – Ruby Rascal

This is low grade stuff for a nursery handicap and may not take much winning over this fast six furlongs. What many people don’t see when they watch racing at the East Sussex track on television is that it is a track of two halves over this distance. Very much a free wheeling flow down the first three furlongs before a stiff uphill finish from the halfway point.

The key to this race could be in a Windsor nursery at the beginning of this month when Kaleidoscope Eyes came home nicely in third spot when just three parts of a length off all the way winner Piranha Rana. A further five lengths back in seventh place that day was the Joseph Parr trained runner RUBY RASCAL.

That day the daughter of Iffraaj was very keen through the first quarter mile and ran up a blind alleyway at halfway. By the time that Callum Shepherd had extricated her her chance had gone, but she still ran on very nicely in the closing stages finishing full of running. That form figure of ‘7’ next to her name should ensure that the bay filly goes off at a price and if the dead eight go to post she should be solid each-way value with the stiff finish set to suit.

‌16:00 Tipperary – Jackjaro

This renewal of the Listed Abergwaun Stakes looks very competitive and back down to five furlongs, the three-year-old and course and distance winner She’s Quality has claims. However, she has endured quite a busy campaign and I cannot quite see her bridging the ratings’ gap with a few of these.

The nod goes to David Marnane’s charge JACKJARO who they tried to stretch out to seven furlongs last season, but he didn’t simply get home on a couple of occasions albeit on a pretty testing surface. However, he has always had a high cruising speed and that should be put to good use here.

His Group Two fourth of nine when fourth behind Believing in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes is just about the best form on show here and his last run back at the Curragh can be forgiven in the account that the ground would have been quick enough that afternoon.

17:00 Tipperary – Thrifty Of Digby

As regular readers know I am always very interested in low grade handicaps in Ireland as it is intriguing to find a ‘lurker’ at a price and the two divisions of this nine furlong event fit that bill very nicely.

Latin has certainly come down to a very handy rating, but keeps on giving up good chances by running way too freely in his races and may once again set the race up for one of the finishers. The top weight, Hemight certainly fits that bill having finished with aplomb from some way back over seven furlongs at Leoprdstown in July in what looked a better race than this.

Any money for the Connor King runner (especially as he is owned by a syndicate) would be significant. But it is the Jessie Harrington runner THRIFTY OF DIGBY, probably at a shorter price, that looks the best handicapped horse in the race with the likelihood of more improvement to come.

The chestnut filly has always threatened to get off the mark once she is given a test of stamina more in line with her breeding and she was not given a hard time following a short break when finishing off her race nicely when fourth of 14 over a mile at Killarney a week ago. Set to race off a 1lb lower mark, she could prove too strong in the closing stages for the majority of her 15 rivals.
