13:50 York – Enfjaar (each-way)
The Ebor meeting at York ends today but there’s still plenty to get stuck into and coverage starts here with the Group 3 Strensall Stakes over a mile and a furlong. There are question marks about a few of these but not ENFJAAR, who goes for Roger Varian and Jack Mitchell. My hope could be just about an each-way price and should be bang in the mix after his fine second to Take Heart in handicap company at Glorious Goodwood. He needs more here but stays well and comes in great form.
14:05 Goodwood – Formal
ITV also go to Goodwood on Saturday starting here with the Group 3 Prestige Fillies’ Stakes for juveniles over 7f. FORMAL made a fine debut at Newbury when picking up an experienced Gosden inmate and might just roll back the years in being a decent Cheveley juvenile for Sir Michael Stoute. The daughter of Dubawi is very likely to improve for that run and clearly has talent.
14:25 York – Tactician
Here’s a big betting handicap in the Melrose for three-year-olds over a mile and three quarters. TACTICIAN could still be well handicapped and looks a progressive stayer for Andrew Balding. He probably should have won at Ascot two runs ago and was back to winning ways over a bit further at that track last time. Up 5lb here but stays very well and has a fine draw.
14:40 Goodwood – Lead Artist
A Group 2 here in the Celebration Mile over a mile. Everyone knows LEAD ARTIST is one of my favourite horses but this is not easy and he might get taken on by Sonny Liston – if running away like last time – and Poker Face. He also would not want any rain. That said, there is nothing to suggest Lead Artist has to go from the front and he was good at this course when last seen. Kieran Shoemark rides for John & Thady Gosden.
15:00 York – Audience
Up in class now for the Group 2 City of York Stakes over seven furlongs. Lake Forest is interesting up in trip but the make up is once again perfect for the Lockinge winner AUDIENCE to score. With Art Power likely to bang off in front but unlikely to stay, Audience can settle and just sit second before pouncing under Robert Havlin for John & Thady Gosden. Just as the pair did last time at Glorious Goodwood in the Lennox.
15:35 York – Epic Poet (each-way)
The main betting contest of the week in the Ebor Handicap over a mile and three-quarters. The trip is a bit of a question mark, but there are real signs in his recent form that EPIC POET will relish this step up in distance. The David O’Meara runner, has been in great form this season without winning. He returned with a sixth at this track when the effort was clearly needed, and then went to Royal Ascot over a mile and a half where he finished off strongly into second behind Crystal Black. That was over a mile and a half in the Duke of Edinburgh, and so it was no surprise that he found an extended mile and a quarter back here too short when again finishing well into fifth behind Enfjaar. He’s up 3lb now but if getting home has a strong each-way chance under Danny Tudhope.
16:10 York – Elmonjed (each-way)
A handicap over six furlongs. Billyjoh was very unlucky in the Stewards’ Cup when the draw beat him which was gutting for this column – he could easily go in here. ELMONJED came good at Windsor last time and I still feel he’s got more in him than he’s showing. Blinkers were fitted last time and he travelled well after a little bit of an iffy start. He stays this trip strong and William Haggas loves a winner here. Tom Marquand rides. A big each-way chance.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
