Horse Racing Tips: Rory Delargy’s Day 1 ITV Racing fancies at York

Rory is always on the hunt for value and he's sweet on Calandagan in the 15:35.

14:25 – Wimbledon Hawkeye (each-way)
15:00 – Kings Gambit
15:35 – Calandagan (each-way) (NAP)
16:10 – Forza Orta

13:50 – Bold Optimist

Bold Optimist has been in very good form this season and will go forward from stall four. He’s trained in Ireland by Danny McLoughlin and his win last time was impressive. They took the headgear off there and that brought about some improvement. He was ridden with a little more restraint last time and those tactics can help again over this extended 5f trip. He should sit in and arrive late. A mark of 84 still looks decent after his Curragh win last time.

14:25 – Wimbledon Hawkeye (each-way)

I’ll rely on Wimbledon Hawkeye each-way against the big two in the market, namely Ruling Court and The Lion In Winter. He could be a decent project going forward through his two-year-old career. The James Owen stable could be in better form but this is a Group 3 contest and they’re sure to have looked after him.

15:00 – King’s Gambit

This is a tight race and while I’m not overly convinced about King’s Gambit’s stamina, he certainly has the speed for it. The London Gold Cup winner was a little unlucky when second to Jayarbee at the Royal meeting and the winner has franked the form since. He had to make the running last time and was beaten into second, but he emerged with a lot of credit from that effort.

15:35 – Calandagan (each-way) (NAP)

I like Calandagan a lot as an each-way bet and he’s my NAP of the day. I’ve got no problem with him as a 1m 2f horse. I was very keen on him at Royal Ascot and he won the King Edward Stakes. When I saw him at Ascot  I thought he could be the best horse in Europe! From what I’ve seen of him, he’s done nothing wrong. I’m not deserting him now!

16:10 – Forza Orta

Forza Orta won this last year and disappointed wearing head gear last time at Goodwood. He’ll be a lot happier now back on a track that produced his last winning performance. Despite his finishing position at Goodwood, he was less than six lengths behind the winner. This two-mile trip at York suits him better and I’m sure he’s been aimed at this contest for a while now. Hollie Doyle is on board and while stall one isn’t ideal, if they come up the centre of the track rather than race against the rail, he should be fine.
