Horse Racing Tips: Mick Fitzgerald’s Wednesday wagers at York including a 16/1 shout

Mick has his say on the first day of the York Ebor Festival and he's sweet on Ghostwriter as an each-way shout in the 15:35.

Wednesday’s York Betting Tips:

13:50 Pilgrim
14:25 Ruling Court
15:00 King’s Gambit
15:35 Ghostwriter (each-way)
16:10 Samui
16:45 Star Of Lady M (each-way)
17:20 Number (each way)

*All prices are bang up to date with our snazzy widgets, while odds in copy are accurate at the time of publishing but subject to change.

13:50 Pilgrim

This fantastic four-day Festival starts with a 5f sprint where Pilgrim comes in chasing a hat-trick of wins. Jockey Joe Fanning keeps the ride unsurprisingly having won on him three times in all, including the last twice. Pilgrim won the Prince of Holyroodhouse Handicap last time and that form has been well franked by those further down the field since.

14:25 Ruling Court

This looks a match on paper between Ruling Court and The Lion In Winter who was a good winner at the Curragh on debut and the third that day, Ides of March, has won since. Godolphin’s Ruling Court was a big ticket purchase at the sales and may just have the measure of the Irish challenger.

15:00 King’s Gambit

The Great Voltigeur Stakes sees a small-but-select field of six declared with Aidan O’Brien’s runners making up half the field. Ballydoyle obviously want to ensure a strong gallop for the Irish Derby winner Los Angeles but King’s Gambit may be the surprise package. The London Gold Cup winner was a little unlucky when second to Jayarbee at the Royal meeting and the winner has franked the form since.

15:35 Ghostwriter (each-way)

There is no doubting City Of Troy’s ability and he’s proven that by winning the Epsom Derby and the Coral Eclipse Stakes. However, he’s a stayer and this 10f trip at York mightn’t play to his strengths. If it turns into a speed test, there could be a surprise on the card. I prefer the chances of Ghostwriter (each-way) at the prices. He was a narrow two-length third to City Of Troy at Sandown on soft going and the better ground should be in his favour now.

16:10 Samui

Gordon Elliott’s dual purpose runner Samui didn’t get to run when fancied at the Shergar Cup meeting a couple weeks ago. Despite carrying plenty of weight now in this two-mile handicap, we don’t really know how good he is yet on the Flat as he’s very lightly-raced. I’m willing to take a chance that he’s still improving.

16:45 Star Of Lady M (each-way)

Star Of Lady M beat Rosy Affair on her last start at Newmarket but before that, Rosy Affair had beaten one of the market leaders now, Gutsy Girl. I’d sooner row in with Star Of Lady M (each-way) in this big-field handicap.

17:20 Number (each way)

I feel that John Butler’s horse in here, Number, is a long shot who’s really going to be suited to the track. He got beat a nose at Ascot last time and that’s an uphill finish which is not the case here at York. Off a mark of 72, his form has been boosted with that maiden at Windsor and he’s quite well handicapped as an each-way selection.
