ITV Racing is all over York this week for the Ebor meeting and coverage gets under way here with a handicap over an extended five furlongs. This is wide open and the draw will be crucial. Pilgrim and Holkham Bay are up in the weights massively now, but there might still be a little bit more to come from SHAGRAAN, the mount of Tom Marquand and trained by Mick Appleby. He was behind Pilgrim at Ascot recently, but he was giving 2lb then and gets 2lb here. He has since run well to score at Goodwood and is bang in form. He has an each-way chance.
14:25 – Ruling Court
Up in class now for the Group 3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes for juveniles over seven furlongs. RULING COURT will take all the beating for Charlie Appleby and William Buick. The 2,300,000 juvenile by Justify was very impressive at Sandown on debut and was hammered in the betting so connections knew they had something useful. Will stay a mile with ease in time.
15:00 – Los Angeles
Now the St Leger trial in the Group 2 Great Voltigeur for three-year-olds over a mile and a half. On ratings Kings Gambit is right in the mix getting 5lb from LOS ANGELES, but the latter will grind this out with the run on the race near the front end. Aidan O’Brien has a pacemaker in here to make this a proper test and that’s what the Irish Derby and Epsom third needs to show his best. Ryan Moore will be hard to stop.
15:35 – Ambiente Friendly (each-way)
Now the big Group 1 of the week in the Juddmonte International over an extended mile and a quarter. City of Troy can win this but the each-way bet has to be AMBIENTE FRIENDLY for Robert Havlin and James Fanshawe. Ambiente Friendly looked like a classic non stayer over a mile and a half when chasing home City of Troy in the Derby and again weakened in the Irish equivalent when third and running behind Los Angeles. He travels strongly and clearly stays the longer distance as he won the Lingfield Derby Trial, but in this kind of class I suspect this is his trip and he really does have every chance of hitting the frame at the very least and possibly causing a small upset.
16:10 – Knightswood (each-way)
KNIGHTSWOOD was a real eye-catcher at Goodwood when behind the placed Great Bedwyn and he might be able to reverse that form. Charlie Johnston’s experienced five-year-old has been in good form without winning of late and prior to Goodwood he had shaped well enough when fourth at Newmarket. He really should have an each-way shout under Joe Fanning. He goes to York for the first time and I think the long straight will suit his style.
16:45 – Jumbeau (each-way)
Here’s a handicap over five furlongs. JUMBEAU might have a little each-way chance for Tom Clover in a wide open sprint. He was a decent winner at Windsor earlier this term off 84 in a small field and wasn’t disgraced at Ascot a couple of runs ago. Can be forgiven a flop over 6f last time and is down 1lb here.
17:20 – Invited (each-way)
A wide open handicap over six furlongs. INVITED is the each-way hope for Richard Hannon and David Egan. He has yet to win a race but has been strongly fancied to do so. I suspect a strong pace will suit and this big field. Hopefully will come late and fast.
