It is difficult to see past POWER OF TWINS, who should have opened her account at Bath last week, looking firmly in control entering the final 100 yards, but her jockey eased her down, and she was caught on the line. Her rider received a 28-day ban for failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures on a horse which would have finished first.
She looks potentially very well treated now making her handicap debut and she is bred to appreciate this step up to seven furlongs. Al Waseela has been allotted a very low opening mark for one from a top stable and is feared most, particularly if the betting vibes are strong.
14:30 Spectacular View
The only one with experience doesn’t set a tall standard so this looks primed for a newcomer with several big yards represented. Preference is for the Charlie Appleby-trained SPECTACULAR VIEW, who cost 270,000, is typically well bred, and represents a yard who have plenty of first-time-out winning juveniles.
Matauri Bay fetched 500,000 guineas as a yearling and is a brother to a Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf winner, too, so looks next best on paper.
15:00 Soverign Slipper
SOVEREIGN SLIPPER stepped up on his recent efforts when resuming winning ways over five furlongs at Chepstow last month, winning for the first time since late-2021, and also providing his trainer with a first winner of the year.
He is worth marking up for that victory, too, as he was the only one to make up any ground on the leader from off the pace, and with the return to six furlongs no problem, he is expected to go well again from a 4 lb higher mark. Silent Flame, who is going through a good spell at present, can pose the biggest threat, with Crafty Spirit also respected.
15:30 Laser Focus
LASER FOCUS made a positive start for James Owen earlier in the year, winning back-to-back handicaps on the Flat at Windsor and Lingfield in May, and running just as well in defeat when placing on his next three starts.
He didn’t fire back over hurdles when a short-priced favourite at Uttoxeter last month, where he wasn’t always fluent, and he remains on a fair mark back on the level. Bobacious should be on the premises, and Livinthelife has been running with credit for a while, so they’re both dangers.
16:00 Lady Wingalong
LADY WINGALONG has shown improved form upon joining this yard this season, winning a couple of handicaps at Lingfield and Salisbury, and she was just run out of things late on when third turned out under a penalty at Wolverhampton 13 days ago.
She remains well-treated from just 1 lb higher now and looks to hold leading claims of resuming winning ways in what doesn’t look like the deepest race. The biggest threat could come from Asmund, who was successful here on his penultimate start, with Available Angel also considered.
16:30 First Encounter
A tightly-knit handicap to finish the card in which FIRST ENCOUNTER edges the vote off just a 1 lb higher mark than when winning over an extended mile at this course last time out. The return to this longer trip will suit and he seems sure to launch another bold bid.
City Escape arrives in good order and heads the list of dangers, although Khangai, High Court Judge, and Ceruliean Summer are all weighted to have a say too.
