14:48 Downpatrick – Instant Tendance
This race surely revolves around the enigmatic Dollar Angel who looked as though he didn’t fancy it last time out at Sligo when he nearly refused to race. That meant he set off at the back of the pack which is simply not his natural running style. However, waiting tactics seemed to suit the grey gelding and he went through the field from half way like a hot knife through butter, and before you knew it, young Alex Harvey bolted clear on his partner at the second last.
I’m not so sure connections were too happy with him winning by 16 lengths though, which will see him get a massive hike in the weights, hence his quick reappearance only three days later. If he gets away on terms he is obviously very well in here, but is sure to be high in the betting and Gordon Elliott could have the key to beating him with his two entries.
The four-year-old Mordor put up a career best effort at Galway last time out and there is more to come from him, but the two year’s older stable mate INSTANT TENDANCE has better credentials. The daughter of Joshua Tree could never get to grips with the prolific Gale Mahler last time at Galway, but this looks easier, and if Dollar Angel goes off at a fast pace that will play to her staying strengths and she may be able to outstay her rivals down the home stretch.
15:30 Leicester – Rebel Angel
This may only be a class six handicap over a mile and a half, but it has plenty of strength in depth for an event of this nature. With Shariq Mohd retaining the ride, and taking 7lbs off The Pug, he looks set for a seasonal best following two disappointing runs over 1m 6f and then 1m 2f last time out.
However, this is his optimum set-up and he could go well at a price if we get a good end-to-end gallop which seems more than plausible. The same remarks though to REBEL ANGEL after she was a massive eye-catcher last time out over a mile and a quarter at Chepstow. She looked likely to be tailed off half a mile from home at the Welsh track, but that long home stretch saw her gradually find her feet from two and a half furlongs out, and she came home full of running to be beaten six and three quarter lengths.
The extra half mile is hugely in her favour and this stiffer track is also a considerable plus. And the cream on the cake is the very fair drop of 2lbs in the handicap from the assessor.
15:40 Ripon – Cool Legend
This really is a fascinating mile and a half handicap and any one of four have claims on their best form with two of them open to a bit more improvement. St Pancras is definitely a player having run right through the line to win comfortably at Pontefract last time. A 4lbs penalty looks very fair in the circumstances and I make the Martyn Meade trained runner the biggest danger to COOL LEGEND. This son of Sea The Stars looks like an out-and-out stayer in my eyes and I expect him to make his mark over one and three quarter miles this season.
A winner of an 11 furlong maiden at Kempton last year, he ran really well in a competitive handicap at Epsom at the Betfred Derby meeting, but then raced too freely next time out at Goodwood. There simply wasn’t enough pace in the race for him last time at Newbury, but there are two runners in this six-runner that like to go forward, and he could get a lovely tow into this race with the long home run most definitely in his favour.
16:10 Ripon – Protest Rally
The enigmatic Spanish Angel is always a player wherever he runs in class six events and there is certainly nothing wrong with his current handicap mark of 50 on turf, rated a deal higher on the all-weather where his beloved Wolverhampton is much more his port of call. He may well be worth a saver, but I will be backing him when he returns to running around a bend and he has to be delivered at exactly the right time.
So the percentage calls here surely have to be the old boy and course and distance winner Latin Five and Liam Bailey’s charge PROTEST RALLY.
He keeps on churning out performances, so much so the handicapper doesn’t have any leverage to drop him in the ratings. However, a repeat of his close up second to Dunnington Lad here in June, or his cracking last time out effort, when he ran the well handicapped Glory Fighter to three parts of a length at Musselburgh last week.
