The Racing League heads to Chepstow on Thursday with seven races on the Flat schedule as part of the third week of the 2024 summer competition.

With regional pride at stake, Paul Jacobs runs through the card, with a pick for the big hitters. Ahead of this week’s action, the East are leading the way at the top of the table with 365 points ahead of Wales and The West on 263.5.

17:30 – Rainwater (The North)

Youarenotforgiven won a race with little strength in depth last time out and although he could go well off this new mark, I would much rather have an interest on Richard Fahey’s charge RAINWATER. The daughter of Mayson put up a career best last time at Chester and has her best days ahead of her, and in the hope that showers take the sting out of the ground, she looks a big contender here.

18:00 – Get The Music On (Wales and The West)

Wales and the West need to get the first punch in to reduce the huge lead of The East after their amazing run at Wolverhampton in the last round and the bay filly GET THE MUSIC ON may be able to do the winning deed. She bounced back from a poor run at Goodwood (right out the back off a soft pace) with an encouraging effort at Leicester and this easier track is sure to play more to her strengths. The nicely drawn Lessay is also interesting off his lowest handicap mark to date.

18:30 – Coup De Force (Wales and The West)

Down in grade and distance, Gisburn, will be more at home at this level off a mark of 84, but I have a feeling he needs a bit of ease in the ground so any forecasted showers would be of immense help. If the going does change then Richard Hannon’s charge is a serious player. Hat-trick seeking Alpine Girl has nothing in hand off her new mark, so with Ingra Tor crying out for a drop to five the nod goes to Stuart Kittow’s COUP DE FORCE who has been hitting the bar of late and is back down to a mark 1lb below his last winning rating.

19:00 – Alligator Alley (Ireland)

I have gone over a cliff with Existent of late and with his last win being 27 races back it would be typical if he were to win here after running a fair race at Haydock on Sunday. But surely the percentage call is David O’Meara’s charge ALLIGATOR ALLEY. He was ridden a different way (from the front) to finally return to winning form at Thirsk on Saturday and a 4lbs penalty should not prove a burden. Take him to nail Manila Scouse late on and enable Ireland to close the gap on the top two.

19:30 – Gangster Granny (Ireland)

Having won a class six handicap off 60, Walter Hartright has reeled off subsequent victories off 65, 72 and 78. A career high mark of 85 awaits and this is where the winning run may come to an abrupt halt. Dream Harder (pulled hard) was beaten five lengths by the former giving him 16lbs last time out, but only has a 4lbs turnaround, so the other three-year-old in the race could be the call having run in the same race and beaten two and three quarter lengths. GANGSTER GRANNY is now 4lbs better off having endured a nightmare passage that day.

20:00 – King Lear (Ireland)

Again plenty of collateral form here with four of these re-opposing having run against each other at Yarmouth on July 25th. KING LEAR was a well backed favourite that evening, but coming off the back of a 301-day break he just ran a shade too free in the first half mile. However, to his credit, he only backed out of the end game from about 200 yards out and will strip much fitter here. Add to the equation that it was only his fifth career start and he has been dropped a pound and I could see him taking a big step forward here and taking care of Selwan (interesting with first time cheekpieces) and the progressive and lightly raced Financier to make it a cracking night for Ireland.

20:30 – Streets Of Gold / Tanmawwy (London & The South / Scotland)

I was at Newmarket for his closing effort in the Abernant Stakes and was convinced 7f would be STREETS OF GOLD’s optimum pick this season and his subsequent sixth in the Victoria Cup definitely backed up that theory. Take the four-year-old to give the weight away to Rahmi, Maywake and TANMAWWY. However, the last named may well be worth a saver at a huge price after catching my eye on his last two starts at Haydock and York and is arguably the best-handicapped runner of the whole evening.
