Goodwood Cup tips and runner-by-runner guide to Goodwood 3.35 on Tuesday

Can Kyprios be stopped?

Kyprios wins the Goodwood Cup in 2022

Kyprios bids to make it four from four for the campaign in the feature on the opening day of Glorious Goodwood.

Ballydoyle’s brilliant beast regained the prestigious Gold Cup on his most recent appearance and will attempt to do the same in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes after missing last year’s title defence through injury.

There are set to be six horses in opposition including a trio renewing rivalries from the Royal Ascot highlight, although Sweet William has 6l to find, while Coltrane and Gregory were even further behind.

Veteran stayer Trueshan, the winner of the Goodwood Cup in 2021, heads into the race off the back of a Listed success at Sandown earlier this month.

Al Qareem tackles a Group 1 for just the second time in his career and the line-up for Tuesday’s 15:35 is completed by Tashkhan.

Goodwood Cup 2024 verdict

Timeform: KYPRIOS looked back to his best when regaining the Ascot Gold Cup 6 weeks ago having missed the majority of last season, and he can do the same here having won a stronger renewal of this race 2 years ago. Gregory’s run in the Ascot Gold Cup was too bad to be true so may bounce back, with his stablemate Sweet William best of the others.

Goodwood Cup 2024 runners and riders

The following horses have been declared for the Goodwood Cup 2024.

Al Qareem

Trainer: K. R. Burke Jockey: Clifford Lee Age: 5 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 5

Smart performer who shaped as if back at the top of his game when second in Group 3 at York (13.85f) 17 days ago, couldn’t quite sustain a generous gallop. However, opposable at this level up in trip.

**

Coltrane

Trainer: Andrew Balding Jockey: Oisin Murphy Age: 7 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 4

Enhanced his excellent record at Ascot when winning Sagaro for second successive season in May. However, not as consistent as he used to be and was beaten over 11 lengths when fifth in the Ascot Gold Cup next time.

***

Gregory

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: James Doyle Abge: 4 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 2

Most progressive when winning first 3 starts last season, notably when making all in Queen’s Vase. Excuses in Great Voltigeur/St Leger and made an encouraging return when third in Yorkshire Cup. Too bad to be true in Ascot Gold Cup since so no surprise if he bounced back.

***

Kyprios

Trainer: Aidan O’Brien Jockey: Ryan Moore Age: 6 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 1

High-class stayer who looked back to his very best when regaining the Ascot Gold Cup 6 weeks ago, his fifth career Group 1 success. Also won this 2 years ago and hard to oppose in what doesn’t look a strong renewal.

*****

Sweet William

Trainer: John & Thady Gosden Jockey: Robert Havlin Age: 5 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 3

Progressed into a smart stayer last season and has improved again this term, stepping up on his comeback when winning the Henry II Stakes at Sandown. Good third in Ascot Gold Cup since but has 6 lengths to find with Kyprios. Needs to be played late.

***

Tashkhan

Trainer: Brian Ellison Jockey: Ben Robinson Age: 6 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 6

Smart stayer who signed off for 2023 with a solid third in the Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp. However, well held both starts this season so plenty to prove.

*

Trueshan

Trainer: Alan King Jockey: Hollie Doyle Age: 8 Weight: 9st 12lbs Draw: 7

One of the leading stayers of recent years and showed he still has plenty to offer when landing the Doncaster Cup and Prix du Cadran last season. Not disgraced under a penalty in Sagaro/Henry II Stakes first 2 starts this term before taking advantage of drop in grade at Sandown. Needs rain.
