14:10 – Lil Guff

It’s been a long time between drinks, and LIL GUFF has tested the patience of punters this year. But she lurks on a good mark and from a handy stall with Oisin Murphy back in the saddle, there’s cause for optimism now back at the scene of her most recent success (which came off a 6 lb higher mark).

Connie’s Rose has thrived on the application of cheekpieces (2/4 since they went on) and is a big threat despite a small weight increase, along with Alligator Alley who tries that headgear for the first time.

He is very well-handicapped but needs to start more alertly. The similarly well-treated Glamorous Breeze and the consistent Jenever look the pick of the rest.

14:40 – Ruling Court

Charlie Appleby continues to saddle plenty of winning debutants and Justify colt RULING COURT is the standout having fetched €2,300,000 at the Arqana May Breeze-Ups. His dam was a useful US 1m-9f winner, most notably a sister to the Racing Post Trophy winner Johann Strauss from an excellent family.

Best Adventure stepped up on his debut when second at Lingfield and sets the standard, with the stiffer finish here likely to suit a horse who will stay 1m well, while Pantile Warrior offered something to work on when sixth at 25/1 in what looked a decent C&D maiden.

Houndsworth looks the pick of the rest, having shaped as if better for the run when fourth on debut at Beverley.

15:15 – Flaming Stone

Lots of potential on show but Andrew Balding won this race in 2018 with Look Around and his Kingman filly FLAMING STONE created an excellent impression herself when going in by four lengths at Newbury.

She is fancied to take this step up in class in her stride with that form having been franked by the placed horses running well in defeat since.

Alla Stella is another with better days ahead of her and heads the list of dangers, for all she may have preferred another furlong, with easy Redcar debut winner Love Talk another in the picture now she steps up to 7f.

Fellow debutante winners Santa Savana, The Terminus and Del Ray complete the shortlist, with the last-named perhaps of most interest having shown plenty of greenness (jumped the path) when winning.

15:50 -Kalidasa

An interesting three-year-old staying handicap. Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ KALIDASA showed useful form on only his second start when fourth in a good Newmarket conditions race in the spring and can improve again back from another break.

He is beautifully bred (a 2.8m guineas colt by Frankel out of So Mi Dar) and is well-thought-of, having been sent off at 3/1-on when making a successful debut at Wolverhampton in January.

My Dream World looks sure to benefit from the step up to 1¾m and is second choice ahead of Incensed who has progressed with each start and represents the yard which won this race three times in a row between 2020 and 2023 (as well as 2011 and 2013).

None of the other three can be discounted, most notably Cock And Bull who has earned this step up in class with a series of excellent hold-up performances.

16:20 – Siempre Artuto

Success story (five wins in his last eight starts since early December 2023) SIEMPRE ARTURO is going from strength to strength and overcame a slow start to score with something in hand at Newmarket last time, so he takes marginal preference over Quietness, who is also seeking a four-timer after starting life in handicaps on a favourable mark.

C&D winner Silver Gunn can make his presence felt if he settles, though more patient tactics employed last time didn’t quite have the desired effect. Market support for handicap newcomer Enrico Caruso, who is from a successful family, would look significant, though he has lots to prove after an underwhelming reappearance last month.

16:55 – Samoon Star

The very well-bred (sister to the very smart winner up to 1m Al Suhail and half-sister to three winners, including very smart 1¼m-12.5f winner Telecaster and useful 1m-1½m winner Starcaster; dam 1m winner who was runner-up in Oaks/Irish Oaks) SAMOON STAR improved on her exploits in novice/maiden company when making a winning handicap debut at Leicester four weeks ago.

She makes plenty of appeal in her follow-up bid nudged up 3 lb. Newbury winner Laura Bay, who represents an in-form yard, and Hamilton scorer Rose Branch head up the dangers, with top-weight Silver Nightfall another to keep an eye on having slipped in the handicap and able to contest a 0-70 handicap as a result.
