The Racing League is back on the agenda from July 25 as part of a six-week competition spread across the UK racing circuit.

The action  takes place every Thursday night, as seven regional teams battle it out, and each week sees seven races with 14 runners (except Wolverhampton, where there are 13 runners) as two horses from each team compete for points. Here with his verdict on night one is the one and only Mr Jason Weaver…

17:30 – The Thunderer (Each Way)

THE THUNDERER often finishes his races off strongly as he is best held up to produce late. Provided he gets a strong gallop to run at over this trip he can be a major player at a huge each-way price. He won’t mind the quickening conditions as so far his best form has been on good or good to firm ground which he will get.

18:00 – Spirit of Applause (Each Way)

SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE is another huge-priced runner who looks dangerously well handicapped after dropping from a mark of 85 to 70. He never had an opportunity to show his true running last time when we saw him at York and all looks in place for a competitive effort.

18:30 – Mr Swivell

We’ve not MR SWIVELL for 118 days, but horses from James Ferguson’s yard don’t normally need a reappearance effort. He was a tidy winner at Southwell and then didn’t manage to back that up when stretched out over quarter of a mile further at Chelmsford. There’s no reason to think he can’t be an improver now switched onto the turf.

19:00 – Storm Star

STORM STAR managed to win on his debut at Newcastle, then ran in a really hot handicap at Kempton prior to a strong run at Sandown where the winner made it all. He’s a low mileage improver with really good pedigree and can be seen in a much better light granted a stronger pace which looks assured given this line up

19:30 – Tropical Island

TROPICAL ISLAND travelled ominously well last time at Newmarket but appeared stretched on the final climb to the line and this step down in distance looks ideal, even though she is switching to open handicap company against her elders. The trainer Richard Fahey has done incredibly well in the racing league fixtures over the years and can be expected to have a strong hand again this time around.

20:00 – Wahraan

WAHRAAN looks to be an assured strong pace for the staying division and that will suit him down to the ground. He tried to go forward last time and those tactics don’t suit, so expect him to be held up. It’s a massive bonus that he steps back up in distance as he looks a thorough galloper and the drying ground is in his favour.

20:30 – Have Secret

HAVE SECRET ran in some very competitive three-year-old handicaps last season and put up a bold show on his return at York 41 days ago. The fact we haven’t seen him since means this has been the long range target and he looks to have a good bit of wriggle room from a mark of just 89. King Lear and Believe In Stars will be of interest and ought to keep his price attractive.
