13:50 Newbury – Alyanaabi
ITV Racing is back Saturday with coverage from Newbury and Market Rasen – something under both codes for everyone – and gets underway here with a Listed even over 1m2f. If ALYANAABI settles surely he will destroy this field for pace under Jim Crowley for Owen Burrows. Of course, the trip is a question mark, as he steps up in distance from a mile in the 2000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes. The former Group 3 winner was fifth in both events, taking a big drop in class here. Al Aasy can’t set a test as he needs to be held up, so I would expect my hope to cruise and pounce.
14:05 Market Rasen – Pyffo
Over jumps ITV starts here with a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f. A wide-open contest. I expect PYFFO to be very hard to catch. The O’Neill runner is down in trip after making all over further at Uttoxeter last time. He’s up 5lb for that and Clararose will be a big rival, but he’s going to set some iffy stayers a strong test here and surely will be hard to peg back under Jonjo Jnr.
14:25 Newbury – Temporize (each-way)
Here’s a handicap over an extended 2m. TEMPORIZE is a very strong stayer and must have a great each-way chance for Syd Hosie and Connor Beasley. I’m happy he stays on a mark of 89 after a fine fifth in the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting, where the last furlong just found him out. This is half a mile shorter and he ran well here over a mile and a half last season.
14:40 Market Rasen – Maxcel (each-way)
Here’s another handicap hurdle over an extended 2m. Good luck here! MAXCEL just touched off Mostly Sunny at Uttoxeter last time and I think he’s going to confirm that form and is the one to beat here. Charlie Deutsch rides for Mel Rowley and my selection is 1lb worse off with the runner-up but I liked the way Maxcel travelled that day and even though he didn’t have the rail he got back at Mostly Sunny. An each-way chance.
15:00 Newbury – Regional
Up in class now for the Group 3 Hackwood Stakes over 6f. This should go to REGIONAL but there are some alternatives in Lake Forest (if ground lightning fast), Elite Status (if repeating comeback win) and Twilight Class (if getting going quicker). My Ed Bethell-trained hope won the Group 1 sprint over this trip at Haydock last season and just got going too later when fifth in the 2023 Nunthorpe over 5f. This term he’s been second to Asfoora at Ascot keeping on well over 5f and before that to Mitbaahy at the Curragh. This is his big chance.
15:15 Market Rasen – Francky Du Berlais (each-way)
Now the big betting race of the day for many in the Summer Plate Handicap Chase over nearly 2m6f. Over the years this has been a good race for this blog. Fingers crossed we get another result. FRANCKY DU BERLAIS has been a good horse for me in this and at the age of 11 many will look elsewhere. But not me. He’s down to 131 here and conditions are ideal for the 2022 hero when he scored off 139. The excellent James Bowen rides for old man Peter. I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
15:35 Newbury – Vingegaard
The annual cavalry charge that is the Super Sprint for juveniles over 5f. VINGEGAARD hasn’t got the lowest weight in this but he has strong form claims for Archie Watson and Hollie Doyle. A winner at Chepstow on debut, My Hope isn’t the most imposing colt but he went to Royal Ascot and ran a fine fifth behind Ain’t Nobody in the Windsor Castle race where he was second of 19 in his group. Must have an eachway claim in a race I suspect Pont Neuf will run better than his 26th in the same Windsor Castle event.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
