13:50 Atlantic Gamble
Atlantic Gamble is on a roll and made it four in a row when successful at Kempton last week, readily quickening to the front and comfortably pulling three and a half lengths clear. He’s getting better with each run, is tactically versatile and still looks well treated here off a mark 4 lb higher than the one he defied at Kempton – he’s 3 lb clear of Sunny Corner on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings and 8 lb clear of the remainder.
14:25 Hawksbill
Hawksbill was held back by inexperience on debut at Sandown a couple of weeks ago but he caught the eye running on well into fourth and is entitled to take a big step forward with that run under his belt. That was potentially a strong novice that Hawksbill contested so it’s encouraging that he showed up so well.
15:00 Ecology
Ecology has a speedy pedigree – she’s by Middle Park winner Earthlight out of Two-Year-Old Trophy winner Ventura Mist – and she made a promising start when runner-up on her debut at Haydock a couple of weeks ago. She had no answer to the winner’s power-packed finish, but she kept on well in second and is entitled to be a bit sharper for that experience, for all she seemed to know her job on debut.
15:35 Miss Show Down
Miss Show Down didn’t offer much when failing to beat a rival on debut at Ascot in May but she left that effort well behind runner-up at Bath last month. Miss Show Down looks likely to progress again and can get off the mark at the third attempt for Clive Cox who has his team in excellent order. Kalahari Blue is bred to be useful and offered a bit to work with when fifth on debut at Goodwood last month, so, with improvement expected, she appeals as the main danger.
16:10 Symbol Of Honour
Symbol of Honour, a 600,000 guineas yearling purchase, was too green to make an impact on debut at Newmarket but he clearly gained plenty of benefit from that experience as he showed much-improved form to win at Lingfield on his second start. That decisive victory earned him a crack at the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot and he ran well to be beaten only a length in sixth. That is the pick of the form on offer and, with further progress expected, he appeals as the one to beat.
16:45 Divine Presence
Divine Presence has shown significant run-by-run improvement and made a winning start in handicap company at Wolverhampton last month despite still not looking like the finished article. Divine Presence was still last two furlongs out in a steadily-run race but she picked up really well and got there close home for a cosy neck success. A 5 lb rise in the weights is unlikely to stop this progressive and well-bred filly following up. Cheekpieces are added for the first time in a bid to help her concentrate.
17:20 Cool Legend
Cool Legend went like the best horse at the weights when runner-up at Goodwood last month, but he carried his head awkwardly and wandered under pressure and was headed close home. He’s clearly got some growing up to do, but it’s possible the return to a more conventional track will suit and the way he moved through most of the race at Goodwood suggests he’s a fair way ahead of his mark. He can make amends off the same mark here.
