14:18 – Fred on Fire
Fred on Fire looked inexperienced in the early stages of the race on his debut at Newcastle but he knuckled down well late on and showed a good attitude to prevail by a neck. Fred on Fire had to work hard to get the verdict but the runner-up was four and a half lengths clear of the third. He showed enough on debut to suggest that he can defy a penalty if making the anticipated improvement.
14:53 – Island of Skye
Island of Skye looked better than ever when making a successful start for Mark Walford (previously with Eve Johnson Houghton) at Thirsk a few weeks ago, doing well to collar one who enjoyed a soft lead. Island of Skye can have that effort upgraded as he was further back than ideal in a steadily run race and he looks capable of defying a 2 lb rise in the weights.
15:28 – Alfa Kellenic
Lightly raced three-year-old Alfa Kellenic is improving in leaps and bounds and completed the hat-trick with something to spare at York last month. Alfa Kellenic impressed with how she moved through that contest before readily asserting to win by two and a quarter lengths, winning in the style of one who still has more to offer. She has a 9 lb higher mark to deal with and is up against some battle-hardened sprinters here, but she looks up to the task.
16:03 – Water of Leith
Water of Leith was in good order when last seen in March and was placed on all three starts. He’s been given a break since then but returns here able to run off the same mark as on his last three starts, and he’s clearly competitively treated. It’s also worth noting that he has won twice at this venue, including once over this trip.
16:35 – Makalu
Makalu is enjoying a productive campaign and went agonisingly close to registering a fourth win of the year when only denied by the narrowest of margins at Ripon last week. Makalu made rapid progress and looked sure to collect when launching his challenge (he traded at 1.01 in running) but the front-runner battled back to edge ahead on the line. The pair were three and three-quarter lengths clear of the third, though, and the thriving Makalu holds excellent claims off the same mark here in a slightly lower grade – he’s 5 lb clear on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings.
17:10 – Hortzadar
Hortzadar had fallen in the weights after some disappointing displays and he took a big step back in the right direction when runner-up at Hamilton on his penultimate start. He confirmed that return to form when filling the same position at Ripon last time, finding only a three-year-old too strong, and he looks in good enough order to register a first win of the season. He’s edged back up the weights slightly following his last two efforts but he is running here off his last winning mark.
