13:50 Newmarket – Involvement
The one I like here is Involvement. He’s already attracted a bit of support in the market and ran very, very well in his penultimate start, finishing second at Haydock. He then went to the Britannia at Royal Ascot and came 7th. That’s better than it sounds because it’s a 29-runner handicap and he had the worst of the draw there. I think he’s crying out for the step up in trip and slightly-softer ground.
14:05 York – Master Richard (NAP)
I like Master Richard here. He’s a horse who has won over 1m at York as a three year old and I’ve always been convinced that he’s better at 7f. A lot of his runs over 1m have seen him leading and fading over the last 100 yards or so. The handicapper is showing him a little bit of slack, dropping him to 87. He was only beaten 1L at Newcastle in November over 1m but dropping back to this trip with cheekpieces on might just be exactly what he wants.
14:25 Newmarket – Heavens Gate
I’m going to go with Heavens Gate. She did too much in front in the Albany Stakes, finishing third in the end. She set strong fractions all through the race before tiring in the final furlong. With Ryan Moore taking the saddle I think this race should set up nicely for her.
14:40 York – Unequal Love
I landed on the favourite Unequal Love in the end. I thought she was very impressive in winning a really competitive race last time out. She’s got a good win record and was gradually progressive last year. She impressed me with how she went about things last time out and seems to be a late developer. She’s a Group winner in waiting and the slightly-softer ground will be in her favour.
15:00 Newmarket – Beamish (each way)
Fairbanks is interesting with first-time blinkers on. He had been running with a visor so it’s not a big change. He’s a player but I wonder if Beamish might be worth a go at a double-digit price. He’s been beaten the last two times for Archie Watson but neither time was by too far. He’s a horse who wants a decent test of stamina so I’d prefer if the ground was still Soft but if this is run at a decent pace then Beamish is capable of springing a surprise.
15:35 Newmarket – Porta Fortuna
Porta Fortuna is clearly the one to beat. There’s a bit of doubt about her on this ground but if it comes Good on Friday that will be no issue for her. Connections are saying the faster the better. I think she was growing last season which might explain a couple of below-par runs.
When she returned at Newmarket she looked a different filly physically. She was unfortunate how the Guineas played out and I thought she was better than the winner last-time out. She’s very likable and has a great attitude as well.
