13:50 Sandown – Twilight Calls (each-way)
A Group 3 5f sprint kicks off the coverage and we may see some rain before the off which could soften the ground considerably if it materialises. Live In The Dream blotted his copybook in Listed company at Haydock when fancied to win and a repeat of that form might still be good enough to win now. He’ll have to work for it though and at the prices, Twilight Calls look a solid each-way play after a sixth-place finish at Royal Ascot. If he can get away quickly, that’ll be a help and he’ll be doing his best work at the finish in first-time cheekpieces.
14:05 Haydock – Dramatic Star
Soft ground horses may have the advantage by race time at the Lancashire tracks and while I’ll be watching the price, I like Dramatic Star. He won his maiden at the third time of asking at Hamilton at long odds on and won well – despite getting the dreaded Timeform ‘squiggle’ in the process as having his own ideas about the game.
14:25 Sandown – Two Tempting
A few of these run in the Royal Hunt Cup where Perotto was the best of them in third. Holloway Boy wasn’t far behind in fifth – just ahead of Metal Merchant in seventh – but Two Tempting brings a good profile into the race. He’s won his last two at Epsom and at this venue a little under a month ago and can follow up over course and distance again.
14:40 Haydock – Tiffany
The Group 2 Lancashire Oaks sees the impressive Tiffany chasing the hat-trick on her third start of the season. She’s improved all season for Sir Mark Prescott with her most recent win coming at Newcastle in what was a deep race. She’s already won on good to soft ground in Germany so there’ll be no issues there and the step up in trip will help too. She just looks better than these.
15:00 Sandown – Indelible (each-way)
Indelible looks an each-way chance to me despite having little chance on the strict reading of the form book. She was beaten by Soprano in the Sandringham Stakes at Royal Ascot getting 10lbs but now meets that rival on level weights. She’s lightly-raced and can improve again on that fourth-place finish at the Royal meeting where the stall four draw did her few favours. She’s my each-way nap of the day.
15:15 Haydock – Chillingham (each-way)
Chillingham has had a nice break and looks to be well treated off a mark of 96. His draw in stall 16 could be better but he makes plenty of appeal as the stable are in better form now than earlier in the season and Chillingham was running fairly well back then.
15:35 Sandown – Ghostwriter (Betting Without City Of Troy)
The feature race of the day where just eight are declared, including the Epsom Derby winner City Of Troy who gets all the allowances as a three-year-old against the older horses. He should win but he’s long odds on. Ghostwriter was fourth in the 2,000 Guineas (ahead of City of Troy) and the French Derby over this 1m 2f trip on soft ground. He’ll want the ground to be a little better but can run well and could be the one for the forecast or in the ‘without the favourite’ betting.
