13:50 Sandown – Equality (each-way)
ITV Racing Saturday gets underway here with a Group 3 sprint over 5f. Every chance Twilight Class will get stuck on the rails here as a closer although the cheekpieces first time are interesting. EQUALITY is the one that I like each-way with a strong gallop assured via Live in the Dream and Apollo One. I could see Equality just sitting behind those two and finishing better under the excellent Billy Loughnane for Charlie Hills. My hope proved at Musselburgh earlier this season he still has an engine although he was poor at Royal Ascot last time.
14:05 Haydock – Wild Waves
ITV also go to Haydock starting with this handicap over 1m6f. This is wide open. WILD WAVES looked progressive when scoring at Doncaster last time when he just kept a little bit back for himself. That was off a mark of 85 and he’s up to 92 here so he will have to improve again but there’s every chance of that for Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy.
14:25 Sandown – Two Tempting (each-way)
Now a handicap over 1m. TWO TEMPTING is too big a price here as a horse who keeps on winning and I can only think he’s ignored because he comes from a smaller stable in Johnny Portman. David Egan rides a horse who is up 2lb after denying the re-opposing Classic and Dual Identity at this track last time. Being ridden prominently might be an advantage here as there are quite a few classy closers and I’ll chance him each-way.
14:40 Haydock – Forest Fairy (each-way)
Up in class for the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks for fillies and mares over 1m4f. I’m very happy to give FOREST FAIRY another try each-way here for Rob Hornby and Ralph Beckett. The Cheshire Oaks heroine could only finish seventh in the Oaks at Epsom but she didn’t act on the track that day and is worth another go. Stays well and surely has more to offer.
15:00 Sandown – Regal Jubilee (each-way)
Here’s a Listed race for 3yo fillies over a mile. REGAL JUBILEE is back at a mile here and that’s a good move judged by her defeat – albeit unlucky – at Goodwood last time. The Fred Darling runner-up can be ridden anyway bringing in plenty of class for Kieran Shoemark and John & Thady Gosden. There are sexier horses in the race but she brings a decent level of form to the table. Good each-way value.
15:15 Haydock – Relentless Voyager
A big betting race in the Old Newton Cup Handicap over 1m4f. I suspect Oisin Murphy also holds the key to this race with RELENTLESS VOYAGER, another for Andrew Balding. My selection is dropped in trip here from a perfect draw and is back to the distance he scored nicely over at Epsom two runs ago. Should run a big race with everything in his favour and his jockey riding out of his skin.
15:35 Sandown – Ghostwriter (each-way)
The big one of the day in the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes over a mile and a quarter. We all know if the City of Troy that turned up at Epsom turns up here he will win.
But with eight runners expected, there is a fabulous each-way look to this race and I’m happy to play GHOSTWRITER for a place with Richard Kingscote and Clive Cox. Like City of Troy, my hope was unbeaten as a youngster landing the Royal Lodge at Newmarket. This term he was miles in front of City of Troy in the 2000 Guineas and then ran a fair fourth in the French Derby when the heavy ground just blunted his pace for all he plugged on. I suspect this trip is ideal and faster ground gives him some hope. From the inside story, he can go forward and just sit behind the pacemaker, as did the mighty Falbrav back in the day.
