13:55 Beautiful Crown
BEAUTIFUL CROWN hasn’t looked back since joining Jack Jones, landing an almighty gamble on his first start for the yard at Lingfield last month and following up under a penalty with the minimum of fuss over a mile and quarter at Chepstow seven days later. He is a further 5lb higher now, but he is clearly thriving at present, and he has won from higher marks in the past, too. The reliable Cervetto could emerge as the main threat, especially if the fitting of cheekpieces ekes out a bit more improvement.
14:30 Aesterius
AESTERIUS was an expensive purchase at the breeze-ups earlier this year and he made an excellent start when making a winning debut at Bath in May, scoring with plenty in hand. He ran a good race up in grade when fifth in the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot last time, moving sweetly through the race for a long way, and he looks a big player down slightly in grade now. Soldier’s Heart is progressing nicely and he recorded a decent time at Goodwood, so is next best ahead of The Actor.
15:05 Dream Composer
DREAM COMPOSER took to the course particularly well when resuming winning ways in the Epsom ‘Dash’ Handicap last time, suited by racing off the pace in a strongly-run race and coming through with a good late run. A subsequent 5lb rise leaves him well handicapped on the pick of his efforts and he seems sure to launch another bold bid. Equilateral showed what a class act he is in handicap company at York last summer and is second choice ahead of last Friday’s Gosforth Park Cup third Navello.
15:40 Anno Domino
ANNO DOMINI’s sales price increased markedly to 525,000 guineas at the breeze-ups earlier this year and he looked a good prospect when making a winning debut at Newbury last month, doing well to defy early in-running trouble and winning more impressively than the final margin suggests. That form is working out well and, given how inexperienced he looked on that occasion, he is just the type to improve markedly now, so he makes plenty of appeal under a penalty. Aegean Sea and Windlord both made promising starts when hitting the frame in a course and distance maiden three weeks ago so are feared most.
16:15 Lions Pride
LIONS PRIDE progressed well last season, winning a couple of times on the all-weather at Kempton, and he proved himself very smart when scoring in listed company in November. He shaped well on his return at that course in April, too, but he found the emphasis on speed too much on the inner loop that day, and is worth chancing to build on that returned to turf given he sets a lofty standard on form in this field. Al Mubhir is a danger after shaping well in handicap company and Checkandchallenge isn’t without hope.
16:50 Quickthorn
QUICKTHORN has an underwhelming reappearance run to put behind him, but there’s no obvious pressure for the lead in this race on paper and, if this past course and distance winner is able to build up an early advantage, he’s going to be tough to peg back under Tom Marquand. Trueshan is the obvious threat dropping back in grade and Night Sparkle is of interest trying this distance for the first time.
17:25 Love Safari
LOVE SAFARI showed improved form fitted with first-time cheekpieces when narrowly denied over a similar trip at Doncaster last week, as expected, well suited by the longer trip and he was coming back for more once headed in the closing stages. He races from the same mark now and must have a good chance of going one place better with William Buick a positive jockey booking. Taritino won’t go down lightly in his bid for a 4-timer, while Cock And Bull can go well again.
