14:50 Curragh – Korker
This looks like a highly competitive renewal of this valuable premier handicap and the likes of Sturlasson and So Majestic have claims at very different prices. The former was so unlucky not to win the three-year-old Dash at Epsom last time out after receiving a bump at the distance, while Kate McGivern’s charge has run well in some top handicap sprints this year both on the all-weather and on the turf and remains fairly weighted.
Off a joint top handicap mark of 105, KORKER has not had the run of things this season, particularly in the class two Lindum York Handicap behind Clarendon House. Held up off a rapid pace in a big field, he looked set to come through and grab the race by the horns from the quarter mile pole, when a gap closed on him at the distance he lost all momentum eventually finishing two lengths off the winner. Since then the selection has picked up the pieces late on with a strong finishing third in the Listed Achilles Stakes at Haydock Park and back down in class I fancy him to prove too strong in the closing stages under Clifford Lee.
15:00 Uttoxeter – Mole Court
When I first looked at the line-up for this valuable Summer Cup Chase I rather fancied Streets of Doyen following an eye-catching staying on fourth in the Connacht National Handicap Chase at Roscommon. He could still go well at a double-figure price, but preference is for Ben Pauling’s MOLE COURT. The seven-year-old disappointed over hurdles at Huntingdon last time out, but that race was merely used as a warm-up for this and can be safely excused as he was never travelling on the sticky ground that day. With a dry forecast, he should be much more at home on this faster surface and his mark of 129 still has plenty more mileage in him on only his eighth case start.
Of his 13 rivals, I have plenty of respect for the very lightly raced Flaming Ambition. For some unknown reason, he jumped badly to his left, but only from halfway at Bangor last time out. If Gary Hanmer has managed to sort that out he has massive claims with absolutely no weight on his back.
16:05 Curragh – Keeper’s Heart
This renewal of the Dubai Duty Irish Derby looks sure to be run at a hectic gallop with at least a couple of pacemakers in the field for Los Angeles. KEEPER’S HEART looked woefully short of the tactical pace when coming third in The Epsom Derby and may need an extra quarter mile to draw his stamina out. On the plus side, this more galloping track will be more to his liking as he rolls around on the camber when asked to pick up.
The second that day, Ambiente Friendly travelled powerfully through that race, but when asked to quicken found precious little off the bridle. So if we get a fast run race I think it will suit the Ger Lyon’s trained runner. It is worth noting that the son of Saxon Warrior finished a closing one and three-quarter length fourth behind Los Angeles in the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown at the beginning of May. His last run in the Listed King George V Cup last time out can be safely ignored as the race was run at a crawl, but the opposite seems likely here and he is set to outrun his massive odds.
16:30 Wolverhampton – Reve De Magritte (each-way)
I love a play in a low-grade handicap on the all-weather and this class six affair over an extended seven furlongs fits the bill nicely. Set to step up to this distance for the first time in 20 months, top-weight Mintana should run well after just failing to get to Savannah Smiles at Chepstow, while course and distance winners, Forgotten Treasure and Miss Calculation are both capable of winning off their current marks. But if you are looking for true each-way value then look no further than Outreach and REVE DE MAGRITTE.
The former has come down to a very attractive mark following a couple of unlucky runs this year but does need plenty to go his way from the home turn to land a blow from off the pace. The tip may only have a moderate record of one win from 28 career outings, but that could easily be four or five. His recent form figures over the course and distance read 623. His runner-up effort behind Van Zant looks like a cracking run when you consider he had to circumnavigate the field with a three-quarter late rush which maybe bottomed him out close home and was the difference between victory and defeat. Set to run off his lowest-ever handicap mark and with regular rider Liam Wright on board, he looks set for a massive run from the inside stall.
