14:30 – Heavens Gate
Aidan O’Brien decided to come for this contest rather than go earlier in the week and connections can be rewarded for their patience. She steps up a furlong and that may suit Heavens Gate was always up towards the front end when winning on her second start, stretching out nicely for an easy victory. She still has a massive amount of improvement left in her, like most of these in the line up.
15:05 – Inisherin
Inisherin looked really good when dropping back down to sprinting over 6f at Haydock, after a fair run in the 2,000 Guineas. He recorded a comfortable success and while not quite looking the finished article that day, he should keep on improving and could well prove best of the three-year-old sprint division, now that Vandeek has gone missing.
15:45 – Skellet (each-way)
Skellet (each-way) put up a good performance on her return in Ireland and didn’t finish that far behind the favourite, Fallen Angel. She was just starting to hit top stride right on top of the line and is going to take a significant step forward from that outing now. There is no reason she should be 10 times the price of Opera Singer.
16:25 – Epic Poet (each-way)
Epic Poet had a nice initial outing for the David O’Meara team at York and looks primed for a big handicap success. He has worked his way down to a very attractive mark of 97, having been highly tried in the early part of his career. This is only his second start for the David O’Meara squad and he’s an each-way player at a nice price.
17:05 – Cat Ninja
Cat Ninja has got a little bit of an attitude and can swish her tail on occasions, which generally isn’t a good sign. However, it doesn’t seem to affect her running style or her willingness to get on with the job in a finish. She bumped into a very tidy colt in Dosman at Kempton and now goes back in against her own sex, in what is a very hotly-contested handicap.
17:40 – Calandagan
Calandagan has been going through the grades very nicely and could easily have the measure of the English and Irish runners. He’s an unknown under faster conditions, but there is every reason to expect he will be equally effective on a faster surface. Quite a few of these are on a recovery mission, but the French raider is on a roll.
18:15 – Sommelier
Sommelier looked really good when chasing home a top-notch performer in Big Evs at York last time, continuing the very decent run of the Marco Botti stable. Ryan Moore gets the call to take over in the saddle which is always a positive and he’s going to appreciate dropping back into handicap company. There’s no Breeders’ Cup winner in this line-up.
