Chantilly and Gallantly give Aidan O’Brien a strong hand in this 12-furlong three-year-old handicap but are priced accordingly.
I am a big fan of the Richard Hughes-trained runner KAMBOO. He was all at sea around Epsom in the Derby and even on a more conventional track the son of Awtaad would have been out of his depth.
A handicap debut off a mark of 89 seems very fair in the circumstances and granted a good draw and back on faster ground I know that the yard fancy his chances of producing a career best, which he must do to hit the frame never mind win. Of his rivals, French Duke looks sure to relish this trip after a rallying effort at Newbury over 10 furlongs.
17:05 Thursday – Native Warrior
This ‘Royal Hunt Cup’ for three-year-olds is even harder to call than the Wednesday cavalry charge as we don’t know the ceiling for each runner. Granted a kind draw and luck in the run, NATIVE WARRIOR, this son of Wootton Bassett may be worth an each-way shot.
After being outpaced two out he ran a cracker behind Notable Speech at Kempton Park before readily landing his maiden at Nottingham. Like many others in this race he remains a work in progress and the likes of the hat-trick-seeking Mickley and Volterra are among a long list that are rightfully respected.
17:40 Thursday – Sons And Lovers
London Gold Cup winner King’s Gambit looks sure to make the market in this Group Three, but I am happy to let him win and instead have an each-way play on Jane Chapple-Hyam’s charge SONS AND LOVERS.
He looked very green when under pressure fully three and a half furlongs out in the Craven Stakes yet rallied well in the last furlong and a half.
He ran a very similar race in the Heron Stakes at Sandown Park and this extra quarter mile will allow him to get better organised and this scopey son of Study of Man can take another big step forward.
15:45 Friday – Rouhiya
Opera Singer and Elmalka dominate the head of the market here and both have obvious claims, but I am firmly on the side of the French raider ROUHIYA who looks sure to relish the return to a faster surface (won on the sand at Deauville).
She may only have won the French 1,000 Guineas by a head, but I have upgraded that success because of the unsuitable soft ground and the fact that she came from off the pace from a wide stall. By my estimation, she should be a single-figure price.
17:05 Saturday – Orazio
Only 3lbs higher than last year, as long as there isn’t too much rain I can see Saint Lawrence running a huge race after his astute trainer has managed to get his handicap mark reduced by running him over seven furlongs.
The classy Flaming Rib is also on my shortlist after getting badly bumped at Epsom last time out. However, it is last year’s sixth, ORAZIO, that makes the most appeal after two contrasting runs at Doncaster and York.
The latter performance is safely ignored as he stumbled coming out of the stalls and as a result, is now 2lbs lower than 12 months ago and this sounder surface is exactly what he wants.
Of the big outsiders I couldn’t put you off Wiltshire, surely better than he showed last time out at Newbury.
17:40 Saturday – So Deuce
A 10f test for three-year-old’s only, it is hard to decipher which of these is going to make the biggest step forward going up in trip.
I really like SO DEUE, son of Lope de Vega, after he ran very green in a way above-average maiden at Yarmouth before easing to victory to open his career account at Leicester in style. If he fails to make the cut of Thursday’s declarations, then the Richard Hannon-trained Persica should go well at a shorter price, if taking up this option.
