14:30 – Miss Lamai (each-way)
Ideally, you’re looking for a filly who has had a bit of a break before coming into this contest. Miss Rascal has some solid form when winning last time at this course and a couple of winners have come from that contest since. However, MISS LAMAI beat the same filly Naana’s Diamond on debut and Thirsk by a similar margin yet is a much bigger double-digit price for the Karl Burke team. She smacks of each-way value to me in the opener.
15:05 – Birdman
I quite like the chances of Jessica Harrington’s BIRDMAN who has won well over 1m 5f so hopefully there shouldn’t be much doubt over him getting the 1m 6f trip. He hasn’t done much wrong so far and seems to be improving rapidly.
15:45 – Ocean Jewel
Laurel hasn’t run for a long time, has a bad draw in stall one and isn’t for me. Rogue Millennium is drawn beside her in box two and that’s not much better as this race is now run on the round course rather than the straight mile for the first time. I’d sooner a wider draw and OCEAN JEWEL was a good winner at the Curragh last time and is still unexposed over a mile. She has a bit to find on the ratings and was a convincing winner over Rogue Millennium which is half her price. She has to concede weight all round but is worth an interest at the prices.
16:25 – Auguste Rodin
With the ground on the fast side, the dual Derby winner AUGUSTE RODIN shades it for me over Inspiral with his proven stamina.
17:05 – Thunder Ball (each-way)
You need to note the handicap plots in these races but it’s never easy to work out where the draw bias will come from. I’m not sure what to expect, to be honest, and there’s no guaranteed pace in the field, as there are no out-and-out front runners. One who is capable of going well is THUNDER BALL. He ran very well in the Britannia last season and faded in the Cambridgeshire over 9f to finish seventh. He’s been making headway this season with a fair effort in the Lincoln and then at Newbury in the Spring Cup. He blotted his copybook at HQ when last of 10 but has had a break since then and can bounce back at a nice price with extra places on offer.
17:40 – Elim
ELIM has a nice draw in stall 13 and had progressive form last season – winning really well on handicap debut at Musselburgh. She reappeared this season at Redcar when fourth to a couple who were well drawn and have won again subsequently. She’s unexposed over 1m and will come on a lot for that first run. I’ll be looking for a Jamie Spencer special to bring her home.
18:15 – Ain’t Nobody (each-way)
With just the 28 runners set to go to post – we’ll definitely be looking for a price. AIN’T NOBODY won a small event at Carlisle for trainer Kevin Ryan but did well, despite looking very green. He showed all the classic signs of a two-year-old’s first day of the races and should behave better this time. He’s drawn 27 and could be underrated in the market at a high double-digit price.
