It was only a small field when SPHERICAL (each-way) managed to win at Yarmouth but it was her dominance late in that contest that identified her as a big improver. We have a top rider booked in William Buick and she can go very well at a big price for the Roger Varian yard.
15:05 Birdman
The Irish raider, BIRDMAN, brings in a perfect 100 per cent record and took the step up in grade to Stakes company in his stride on his second appearance at Navan. He showed a really good attitude and change of gear late on and will appreciate both going up in distance to 1m 6f and the quicker ground.
15:45 Orchid Bloom (each-way)
ORCHID BLOOM (each-way) stepped up dramatically on her return to action, with a staying-on-strongly effort over 7 furlongs in Ireland last time. It suggests that going back up in trip to a mile is definitely going to suit. The perceived wisdom is that she won’t appreciate this quicker ground, however, she’s completely untried under these conditions. Her handler William Haggas lets her take her chance. We should also see that as a positive.
16:25 Alflaila (each-way)
ALFLAILA (each-way) obviously has not been very easy to train as he seems to take a massive amount of time in between his racecourse appearances. On the plus side, we know that he has a very good record when running fresh. He was still improving when we last saw him in an unlucky-in-running effort at Leopardstown at the highest level behind Auguste Rodin who re-opposes.
17:05 Fantastic Fox (each-way)
FANTASTIC FOX (each-way) is becoming a bit of a ‘cliff horse’ for me but there is no doubting he is still very dangerously well treated. The hustle and bustle of this one-mile test seems to suit him very well provided he gets a gallop to run at. If he does, he’ll be flashing home late.
17:40 Karsavina (each-way)
The Irish challenger KARSAVINA (each-way) put up an improved display on only her first try for the Sangster stable with an eye-catching effort at the Curragh last time. That looked like a perfect warm-up effort for this contest and she can get a slice of the action at a big price for the Joseph O’Brien team.
18:15 Hawaiian (each-way)
He managed to get away with the soft conditions on his debut at Newbury but it proved too much of an ask for HAWAIIAN (each-way) under very soft ground at Sandown. The fact that the Richard Hannon team backs him up quickly here indicates we haven’t seen the best of him. The quicker conditions look ideal.
