14:30 Docklands (each way)
I’m going to go for one each way with a small stake and that’s Docklands who won last year’s Britannia Stakes. Docklands has only raced on ground quicker than Good to Soft once and that was in the Britannia when winning on Good to Firm.
Hayley Turner rides again and I really like him on the straight track at Ascot. He was second to Quddwah with Maljoom behind him in May so, at a price, he’s the one each way.
15:05 Camille Pissarro (NAP)
I was with Camille Pissarro at the Curragh when Arizona Blaze got back up to beat him. I thought he came to win it, I thought he had won it, and then for some reason in the last 50-75 yards he faded.
He looked tired and needed the run but I was impressed at Navan and I’m just hoping the Curragh was a stepping stone for this and Aidan O’Brien has him tuned up for Tuesday.
15:45 Valiant Force
This is really competitive and you’re looking for one of the three year olds to bounce forward and put a stamp on it. I was in Punchestown last week and I happened to bump in to Valiant Force’s trainer Adrian Murray. We were talking away and he mentioned Valiant Force twice in the conversation.
He’s back from America and it wasn’t that he gave me any great insight be he went back and mentioned him more than any other horse. He’s drawn in 14 so he’s guaranteed pace wide in the race. He’s a big price, he was a winner at the meeting last year in the Norfolk, so I’m going to side with Valiant Force!
16:25 Notable Speech
It’s hard to see Henry Longfellow out of the money but Notable Speech looks the best horse. Rosallion did really well to win at the Curragh but Notable Speech, I wouldn’t have picked him with 15 goes in the 2000 Guineas, he’s a horse that’s left an impression on me and there’s no way I’m siding against him.
17:05 My Lyka
My Lyka wears a tongue tie for the first time and I’d imagine he’s come forward for the run in Killarney. He was second there and looked like he was going to win heading into the last but he’s quite lazy, he’s a hard horse to get a handle on at home.
He’s got a rating of 98 and he’s had to earn that somehow. He’s in good form, he’s definitely stepped forward and has a wide draw. Ryan Moore rides and he’s won this race a couple of times already. I wouldn’t put anybody off My Lyka because he fits the profile and he’s the right build. He just doesn’t catch the pigeons at home but he’s just not a hard worker.
17:40 Mujtaba (each way)
I’d only be slightly tempted to have a small each way wager on Mujtaba but this might be one I watch with a Pimm’s. Tom Marquand rides but Jim Crowley’s gone for Israr.
Mujtaba is drawn out in 16 which I don’t think will be a disadvantage. He’s had a couple of disappointments this year but was better behind Isle Of Jura at Goodwood in May and got dropped for that, the handicapper thought it was a worse run, but I think it was a step in the right direction so it’s a small wager on Mujtaba at a big price each way for me.
18:15 A Piece Of Heaven
Belloccio was really impressive at Punchestown and he should stay. His handicap dropped over the winter from 107 to 100 but he’s won at Kempton over 1m4 and he’s beaten Purple Ribbon as well.
He goes well, he’s in the right frame of mind, he’s in good form, but when you look at Willie Mullins it’s the longer-distance races that he traditionally wins. I know he won this race last year but it was with Vauban who’s now a Gold Cup horse.
To win this Belloccio will have to be well ahead of the handicapper, maybe he is, but he is a six year old and I’m slightly cautious. I think A Piece Of Heaven is going forward at a rate of knots.
