14:30 Big Rock
Royal Ascot 2024 with all races on ITV Racing gets underway here with the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over a mile. Maljoom is interesting each-way for William Haggas but BIG ROCK is miles clear on ratings and while some will say he needs plenty of juice in the ground I’m not so sure.
The French raider did this column a right touch in the QEII last season when romping clear and he has form on good and started off his early career on an artificial surface. Christophe Soumillon is a massive plus and I’m happy to just accept he needed his debut badly for his new yard and a stumble at the start did not help.
15:05 Camile Pissarro
Now the Group 2 Coventry Stakes for juveniles over six furlongs. Always a bit of guessing with the youngsters but that is half the fun. I’m happy to stick with Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore here with CAMILLE PISSARRO, who cost a cool 1,250,000gns. Won well on debut at Navan and then battled to defeat in the Marble Hill at the Curragh.
Better ground might help him see this out. I like the fact he’s had two starts for experience. The Actor is no mug, and I suspect Arran is useful as well.
15:45 Twilight Calls (each-way)
Back to Group 1 company for the King Charles III Stakes (formerly King’s Stand) over five furlongs. This is wide open. TWILIGHT CALLS is the each-way selection for Ryan Moore and Henry Candy. This would mean so much to the latter, and while my hope is not a prolific winner and has yet to win above handicap company, he has finished second and fourth in this race. His comeback run this term was not a disgrace.
16:25 Notable Speech
Another Group 1 in the St James’s Palace Stakes for three-year-old colts over a mile. A fabulous renewal. NOTABLE SPEECH has to be the selection, but boy do I fear Henry Longfellow. The Godolphin-owned pick was brilliant in the 2000 Guineas with Rosallion clearly seen off in second and I think he will love going around the bend as he looked superb at Kempton. Everything is set for a huge run for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.
17:05 Tritonic (each-way)
Now we are into handicap company with the Ascot Stakes over two and a half miles. Good luck here people. TRITONIC should give us an each-way run. Not so long ago he was winning a chase over jumps, but he was third in this race last year and he’s now 5lb lower.
Two all-weather runs have been far from terrible and I’m sure he’s been lined up for this by Alan King and Rossa Ryan with the cheekpieces popped on.
17:40 Astro King (each-way)
Here’s the Listed Wolferton over just about a mile and a quarter. I’ll want to take on Israr so he will probably hack up. A rating of 114 is high for a race like this. I see no reason why we won’t get a huge each-way run from the wonderful old boy that is ASTRO KING for Richard Kingscote and Danny and Claire Kubler.
The former Cambridgeshire winner was a fine second in the Group 3 Earl of Sefton and was far from disgraced over a mile and a half recently.
18:15 My Mate Mozzie (each-way)
There’s a sense of we’ve made it with the finale being the Copper Horse Handicap over a mile and three quarters. Another wide open contest. Not impossible MY MATE MOZZIE can hit the frame here at least for Gavin Cromwell and Gary Carroll.
The Galway Hurdle third will stay this distance well, and is toughened up as a horse after a chaser career which saw him second in a Grade 1. A fifth in the Irish Cesarewitch was far from poor.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
