14:30 – Enchanting Empress (each-way)
The Queen Mary Stakes over 5f gets us underway on Wednesday and ENCHANTING EMPRESS comes in here with an unbeaten three-race record. She was a good winner at Sandown when trained by Dominic French Davis and now makes his debut for the newly-licenced Raphael Freire. She showed a lot of speed when beating some colts in the line-up that day and that takes a fair effort. She looks a value play each-way.
15:05 – Birdman
Aidan O’Brien usually has a fancied one in this and saddles four runners this time with Illinois the pick of Ryan Moore. I’ll look elsewhere though with Jessica Harrington’s BIRDMAN. She’s had plenty of success at the Royal meeting and doesn’t tilt at windmills with her runners. Birdman has won twice and should be respected.
15:45 – Ocean Jewel
The Group 2 Duke of Cambridge over 7f is a tricky puzzle and it’s not ideal that OCEAN JEWEL has to concede weight all round. However, she looks a bit of value and she’s a fair enough price to take a punt on.
16:25 – Auguste Rodin
On his best from the dual Derby winner and last season’s Bedders Cup winner AUGUSTE RODIN should be winning this. The 1m 4f trip on fast ground at Ascot should be made for him. One for the value seekers is Horizon Dore who can run well.
17:05 – Real Gain
Richard Hughes was a master in the saddle at this track during his riding days and would love to have a winner here as a trainer. REAL GAIN has been aimed and targeted at this contest and William Buick has been booked. The ground at Newbury was too soft on seasonal debut and these quicker conditions will be right up his street.
17:40 – Villanova Queen (each-way)
Another Jessica Harrington runner catches my eye where VILLANOVA QUEEN – who won this contest last season – looks to have a decent each-way chance again. She is just 1lb higher in the weights now and some of the rivals she met that day now meet her on worse terms. She can go close again in this 1m Fillies’ handicap.
18:15 – Shadow Army
The Windsor Castle Stakes over 5f brings the curtain down on day two. Wathnan Racing are investing heavily in the game and their SHADOW ARMY – trained by Richard Fahey – was a well-backed winner at York and can make a splash again.
