Saratoga 19:36 – Idiomatic / Raging Sea

It’s hard to get away from the prolific Idiomatic who will be aiming to win her fifth consecutive Grade 1 and her second top-tier contest over course and distance. She holds much of this field on form and will likely be a short price.

For the forecast, I’d play Raging Sea who finally seems to be realising the potential she showed as a two-year-old and has now won three on the bounce. She’s not faced an opponent of the calibre of Idiomatic yet, but with only eight starts she’s relatively lightly raced for a  four-year-old and might have more to come. I’m hoping she follows the fav home for the forecast.

Saratoga 20:22 – Bookem Danno

A competitive race where the step down in trip for Vlahos looks a smart move. He’s all speed and will be tough to peg back if the track favours the front runners again – as it often does. I’ll take him on with Bookem Danno who makes his first start since running a cracker when finding only Forever Young too good in the Saudi Derby.

The winner has done nothing but frank that form since, winning easily in Dubai before finishing a close third in the Kentucky Derby. That is the best form on offer here by miles. If showing no ill effects from his travels, he should be there at the business end.

Saratoga 21:08 – No Nay Mets (each-way)

Charlie Appleby saddles two runners in Mishchief Magic and Star of Mystery. Presumably William Buick is unable to do the light weight on Star of Mystery and she’d be the pick of the two, but I’d worry about her hold-up running style around the sharp Saratoga turf track. For that reason, No Nay Mets appeals as an each-way alternative. He was a warm order in the market for the Norfolk Stakes last year, but didn’t fire on the day. He then showed his true colours when picking up a couple of Stakes races in the Summer, before finishing a close fourth to Big Evs at the Breeders Cup. He’s been below form in two starts since, so now wears first-time blinkers to try and sharpen him up. With Frankie Dettori in the saddle, he’s certainly an each-way chance if reverting to his best form.

Saratoga 21:52 – National Treasure

The return of Breeders’ Cup Classic winner White Abario and Pegasus’ winner National Treasure in what looks a match on paper. My strong suspicion is that the mile is too sharp for White Abario to be seem to his best and he must leave an abysmal run in Saudi behind him. He doesn’t look one to take a short price about with those question marks hanging over him. My preference then is for National Treasure who ran a cracker in Saudi, only tiring late on having been part of a scorching pace up front. He’s been working very well according to reports and looks the solid option.

Saratoga 22:36 – Al Riffa

Measured Time looks sure to go well for the Charlie Buick combo but preference is for Joseph O Brien’s Al Riffa. We actually laid a decent bit of this for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe earlier on in the year which gives an indication of the high regard connection hold him in. He looked like needed the run when finishing a close-up fourth in the Prix Ganay last time and the sounder surface now looks a perfect fit. I expect him to improve for that run in France and be a tough nut to crack tonight.

Saratoga 23:41 – Dornoch (each-way)

While this looks a perfect for Sierra Leone, his tendency to hang and prove tricky (new tack and rider today) turns me off at the likely prices. The forgotten horse is Dornoch and that’ll make him an attractive price each-way. He beat Sierra Leone in the Remsen in December before finishing fourth to him in the Blue Grass at Keeneland and tenth in the Kentucky Derby when meeting traffic problems. If he gets his favoured front-running position tonight he prove tough to rein in. He showed a really likeable attitude in that win over Sierra Leone and I’m happy to support at the prices.
