14:00 – Running Lion
Derby Day on ITV Racing kicks off here with the Group 3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes for fillies and mares over an extended 1m. I’m stunned RUNNING LION is not shorter in the betting and expect her to take all the beating under Oisin Murphy for John and Thady Gosden. The former Pretty Polly winner returned this term when a decent second on the Dahlia where she probably went for him too soon although it was a positive ride. This trip might well be ideal and she has a fine draw. I’ll be disappointed if she doesn’t win.
14:35 – Epictetus (each-way)
Another Group 3 here in the Diomed Stakes over an extended 1m. A wide open event. EPICTETUS is an each-way selection here for John and Thady Gosden and Kieran Shoemark. The former former French Derby fifth will enjoy running at a strong gallop here which he did not have at Ascot on seasonal debut. I would just forget about that effort and remember his fine Group 3 victory at Goodwood last season when denying Nostrum and Galeron. Class wide he is up to this and he gets a good draw to get a decent position.
15:10 – Mashadi (each-way)
Now a sprint handicap for three year old’s over 5f. Good luck everyone! MASHAADI is piping fit and running well and should have a chance of getting a place at least for Kevin Philippart de Foy and David Egan. A fifth at Newmarket over 6f and then a second at Ascot over the same trip are decent efforts and Mashaadi would have probably won last time but for hanging right. The big issue is my hope remains a maiden and has seven seconds. So each-way is the advice!
15:45 – Live In The Moment
Another 5f sprint handicap but this time for older horses. Rather oddly LIVE IN THE MOMENT has been running over 6f of late and he is a winner over that trip – but he’s all about speed and get’s a huge chance here to make up for last year when he was strongly fancied but his stall opened late. A fourth at Doncaster when last seen was a fair effort as he only lost two places close home and stall 11 is ideal for Sean D Bowen who takes off a useful 5lb for Alice Haynes and Steve and Jolene De’Lemos.
16:30 – Deira Mile (each-way)
Here it is the main Classic event in the Group 1 Derby for three year old colts over 1m4f. Such a hard Derby to have a strong opinion on with City of Troy quite capable on juvenile form of ripping the race apart. For that reason I’m risking one at huge odds and going to have a few quid each-way on DEIRA MILE for Owen Burrows and Jim Crowley who rides for Green Team Racing. Having been outpaced over 2f out, my hope rallied into fourth behind re-opposing Ancient Wisdom and God’s Window (fourth) in the Group 1 Kameko Futurity Trophy at Doncaster last season and stepped up to 1m2f at Windsor he hacked up first time this term to lose the maiden tag. This of course is a huge step up in grade and Deira Mile has his quirks – but first time cheekpieces are interesting and if he’s dropped in and ridden for a place he might just come home strong.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas! You hear me Paddy?
