Damascus Steel had been through a poor spell but a sustained challenge on the AW recently resulted in quite a taking win and good ground can suit now he is back on turf. It may well be worth taking a chance on BALTIC (nap), though, despite the lack of a recent run, as he looks a good candidate to find further improvement this year. Dual bumper winner Mr Zippi makes some appeal now handicapping and The Dancing Poet is also considered.
17:35 – Georgecandoit
This can go to GEORGECANDOIT, who made a promising start when runner-up at Thirsk and pulled 3l clear of the third Al Hussar in that race. He sets a clear standard on that form and should improve for the experience. Jane Garfield was the only runner to apply any pressure to 1-2 shot at Bath 12 days ago and could be the main danger if she can build on that encouraging debut effort. Another to keep an eye on is George Scott’s well-bred newcomer Early Release.
18:07 – The Dragon King
The betting should guide with regard to the newcomers but as things stand the two to appeal most are Cyclonite and THE DRAGON KING. The selection was turned over at odds-on at Nottingham four weeks ago, hanging left in the process, but he was climbing on the ground there and he’s worth another chance to confirm his debut promise now back on a sounder surface.
18:42 – Kind Of Blue
A real mixed bag for this novice. Ananda (second choice) has a long absence to overcome but would prove a big threat to all if fully tuned up, while Back Before Dark is another with winning form who needs considering on her return. Newcomer Angel Of Rain is in excellent hands and brings plenty of potential but the vote goes to James Fanshawe’s Kempton scorer KIND OF BLUE who appeals as the sort to take a sizeable step forward now. Roger Varian’s duo Sanat and Moakad complete the shortlist.
19:15 – Banderas
Plenty are in with a shout. Michael Bell’s BANDERAS made an encouraging return from a nine-month absence and gelding operation when fourth at Ripon and he gets the vote with the prospect of better to come now. Thirsk scorer Dark Jedi heads the list of dangers, although a solid case can also be made for handicap debutant Caustic and in-form pair Churchella and Two Past Eight.
19:50 – Mythical Phoenix
Most of these have question marks surrounding them on one count or another and it looks a race in which to tread carefully. Last year’s runner-up Live In The Moment (second choice) should go well, while Rathbone looks a potential reviver and Bernardo O’Reilly drops in class and is more than capable provided the ground doesn’t dry out too much. MYTHICAL PHOENIX still has potential after just five starts, though, and he shaped with plenty of promise when second at Thirsk on his recent stable debut.
20:20 – Mukaafah
This looks open but MUKAAFAH could be hard to peg back if he reverts to front-running now fitted with a hood, having put up a big performance from the front on the AW two starts ago. There are plenty of alternatives, though, with Mesaafi (second choice) looking a likely improver for his promising turf debut at Windsor, Nighteyes likely to benefit from the return to 6f and Cool Dividend worth a look on his handicap debut.
20:50 – Beach Point
Plenty of these still have it to prove, including BEACH POINT but he began to improve last time and is taken to break his duck. Infinite Honour is another who took a step forward on his latest start and he could be a danger to the selection. As a recent winner, Amerigo Vespucci is respected, while the dropped-in-grade Old Bailey may now be capable of better.
