13:50 Newbury – Desert Hero
ITV Saturday comes from Newbury and Newmarket starting here with the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes over 1m4f. I’m all over DESERT HERO here for William Haggas and Tom Marquand. The St Leger third returned this term with a terrific second at Sandown over a shorter trip and this distance is ideal. I think he should take all the beating.
14:05 Newmarket – Dashing Darcey
Newmarket on ITV starts here with a handicap over 7f. DASHING DARCEY is probably in the grip of the handicapper but comes here in good shape for Roger Varian and Aidan Keeley takes off a valuable 3lb. This trip is ideal and the third at Chester behind Never So Brave was a decent enough effort.
14:25 Newbury – Relief Rally
This could easily be another for William Haggas and Tom Marquand with RELIEF RALLY. The big question with her was whether she had trained on but she showed enough in the Fred Darling to suggest she had when finishing fourth to Folgaria with 1000 Guineas heroine Elmalka a place in front in third. The drop to 6f will be ideal and she’s another who should take a lot of stopping.
14:40 Newmarket – Rainbow Fire (each-way)
I suspect RAINBOW FIRE will be in the mix here for Neil Callan and Marco Botti whose stable is in decent shape. My selection stayed on well at Haydock last time behind Earls inside the final furlong which is not a surprise as he stays well. There should be a better pace here for him to run at so each-way claims.
15:00 Newbury – Brioni (each-way)
BRIONI should have a decent each-way chance here for Alan King and Jamie Spencer. He is better off at the weights with Goodwood Odyssey who was well on top at Sandown last time after a tricky passage. That gives him every chance of getting closer to that rival and he has a good draw to work from. He’s up 1lb from that defeat but solid each-way claims.
15:15 Newmarket – Zozimus (each-way)
ZOZIMUS is fighting fit here for David O’Meara and Jason Watson and is on a dangerous mark of 77. This is a horse that ran well at York off 86 last year and his third over this course and distance two runs ago gives him every chance of reaching the frame at the very least. Another each-way bet.
15:35 Newbury – Inspiral
A high-class renewal but with plenty of pace it’s easy to side with the brilliant Breeders’ Cup heroine INSPIRAL for John & Thady Gosden and a huge ride for Kieran Shoemark. Big Rock put up the performance of last season when scoring at Ascot in the QEII for this column but with Hi Royal in the field and Audience in as a pacemaker, he might struggle for an easy lead for a new stable. Inspiral is a brilliant filly and she can win the first time out so hopefully she won’t lack anything in the way of fitness. Charyn is better than ever this term and who knows how good he might be.
