13:50 Newbury – Desert Hero
DESERT HERO made rapid strides last season going up through the handicap ranks and returned with an excellent effort at Sandown over a trip short of his optimum. Desert Hero still ran a cracker and there’s every reason to think he will have another productive season for William Haggas.
14:05 Newmarket – Serene Seraph
SERENE SERAPH may well look like the Hannon stable’s second string, but if you were to forgive Serene Seraph that one poor effort on heavy ground late last season, I’m sure she’d be vying for favouritism. Connections did talk her up after her success last season as one to keep on the right side of as a three-year-old because she will be better when she grows and strengthens into that big frame.
14:25 Newbury – Elite Status
ELITE STATUS looked an absolute rocket up the hill at Sandown in the middle part of last season and his form started to tail off a little towards the end of the campaign. The Karl Burke yard are in tremendous form as the squad has put much groundwork in early and are ready to roll on their seasonal debuts.
14:40 Newmarket – Quest For Fun (each-way)
QUEST FOR FUN is a huge price considering how well he ran at Thirsk last time, especially as he drops back down to what could be his ideal distance of 7f. The slightly quicker conditions will also prove no problem and a mark of 90 doesn’t look like his absolute limit judged on his two runs so far this season. S.B. Kirrane takes the mount and this partnership has a good record together.
15:00 Newbury – Chantilly
CHANTILLY made a promising return to action with a straightforward success under heavy conditions at Leopardstown six weeks ago. The assessor has raised him 10lbs but he looks to have a good amount of progression left in him, especially as the Aidan O’Brien team on the whole have been needing their first outing. The yard unsurprisingly are building a pretty impressive record in this London Gold Cup as was shown by Unbelievable getting the job done last term.
15:15 Newmarket – Good Karma (each-way)
GOOD KARMA was very well-backed for his return on the all-weather at Chelmsford but ran a very disappointing race. Good Karma never really got going with any fluency, but the return to turf should see him leave that form well behind now. Early on in his career he was pitched into top handicap company at the Royal meeting and could well end up back at Ascot next month if he was to get back on track today.
15:35 Newbury – Charyn
CHARYN looks much improved in 2024 gaining back-to-back successes in great style at Doncaster and Sandown. Charyn was only getting going late after a steady tempo in the early stages which suggests he’s flexible from a tactics point of view. There looks to be a strong pace angle in this which should set up for his closing style of running perfectly.
