14:00 San Francisco Bay

SAN FRANCISO BAY is now a five-year-old, but he arguably enjoyed his best season in 2023, winning a couple of handicaps at up to seven furlongs at Wolverhampton and Lingfield (turf), and he wasn’t disgraced on his return from seven months off a fortnight ago. He is entitled to strip fitter for that outing and he looks most interesting of these from 1lb lower. Big Bard returns from a break on a workable mark returned to turf and is a definite threat, with Beau Jardine also considered.

14:30 Pawapuri

A good-quality staying handicap which can go the way of PAWAPURI, who was a two-time winner on the Flat at up to a mile and a quarter, and has since developed into a fairly useful hurdler for these connections, notably winning a listed mares’ novices’ hurdle at Haydock in December. She is potentially well-treated back on the Flat now judged on her hurdling exploits and she should relish this sort of trip. Duke of Verona and Kyle of Lochalsh showed enough on their respective reappearance to warrant serious consideration.

15:00 Kassaya

The ones with experience don’t set an exacting standard here, so a chance is taken on KASSAYA, who fetched 1,000,000 guineas as a foal, and is related to several winners, notably Chaldean, who won the 2000 Guineas for these connections. If the market speaks in her favour, the hint should be taken. Megalithic is another interesting newcomer, while Pont Neuf should go well even under a penalty.

15:30 Miss Stormy Night

MISS STORMY NIGHT only made her debut last month and has shown improved form with each run, shaping well on her handicap debut over an extended five furlongs at Bath four weeks ago. She raced freely at the rear and met some trouble in running around a furlong from home, but stayed on well once in the clear to finish never nearer than at the finish. She is still unexposed and seems sure to go well again from the same mark. Monkey Miss scored at the same track last time, so she’s the main danger under a penalty, though Irish raider Layoftheland warrants close attention in the betting.

16:00 Master Builder

MASTER BUILDER made a promising start to his career when finding only one with the benefit of experience too strong at Windsor 17 days ago. The third has come out and finished runner-up since, so there is a bit of substance to the form, and he is taken to open his account now with improvement surely forthcoming. He can get the better of Bye Bye Salam, who appeals on paper and makes his debut with his yard going well, while Signalman is also one to consider.

16:32 Oxford Comma

This can go to OXFORD COMMA, who showed plenty of ability when finishing third in a back-end novice event at Newmarket last year, not beaten far by two other well-bred newcomers, and Ralph Beckett’s filly should have lots more to offer now tackling middle distances looking at her pedigree. John & Thady Gosden send out a couple of debutantes and they both warrant considerable respect, too.

17:02 East India Dock

Preference is for EAST INDIA DOCK, who remains a maiden, but continued his progress when only narrowly denied by a fellow improver on his handicap debut over a mile and a quarter at Yarmouth 16 days ago. He is bred to relish this even longer trip and with further progress on the cards, he’s preferred to Cracker Star who has finished runner-up in two starts in handicaps this year, while the hat-trick-seeking Spartan Warrior can’t be ruled out under a double penalty, either.
