14:15 York – Copper Knight (Each Way)
The most obvious pace setter in this race is Tee Spirit coming from Stall Two. and I certainly wouldn’t rule him out, after going up 7lb from Newmarket in April. This is a bit more realistic for him, and I can see him running a big race, but what I can also is him setting it up for a proper favourite and the horse who wins most races at York in COPPER KNIGHT.
He ran an absolute stormer at Chester last time, where he could have won, if he waited and taken the leader on the inside. But, there wasn’t much in it at the line and he was only beaten by a neck. He won off 8081 last season and 97 in 2022. He should run really well here after winning this race twice in the past and he appeals to me as an each way play
14:30 Salisbury – Circuit Breaker
CIRCUIT BREAKER is very interesting here for Jonjo and AJ O’Neill. Cieren Fallon rides and he was bought seemingly to go hurdling, and was beaten by a length off a mark of 87 on soft ground at Haydock in September before changing stables.
He wasn’t seen again until running in the Queen’s Prize at Kempton, where he ran very well to be third, so his form looks pretty solid.
14:45 York – Point Lynas (NAP)
I very much like POINT LYNAS and he was a winner first time out last season. He was beaten on seasonal return two years ago, but I’ve watched that race back, and he had his excuses that day on his first start for Ed Bethell.
Despite that, he can go well again and he loves racing at York. He’s not won there but he’s been second three times and he’s been unlucky with that. He was beaten in this race last year by a head to Croupier, but he’s got the perfect stall 5 draw and he will get the lead early. He’s got a big chance.
15:15 York – Free Wind
I’ve come down on FREE WIND as the most likely winner. There’s not much between her and Bluestocking, they met a couple of times last season, Free Wind came in second in the Yorkshire Oaks and that was by far her best effort of the season, after winning this race in 2023.
Free Wind is better suited to York, she’s got a good record at this venue and her two best runs last season came here. With the ground a little on the soft side, she may just have just enough to win.
15:45 York – Ancient Wisdom
ANCIENT WISDOM is a real contender. He’s had quite a lot of racing as a two-year-old and if you look at how the Classics are panning out this season, you might be wary of horses that have been on the go since before Royal Ascot last year.
However, despite the busy schedule, I like Ancient Wisdom a lot. As a juvenile he looked pretty raw but he won at Haydock and he followed that up well at Newmarket. He then suffered his only defeat in the Pat Eddery Stakes at Ascot, and that is the hottest form for a two-year-old from the middle of last season.
16:15 York – Big Evs
BIG EVS is my pick. He looked like a bull last season, so you’d like to think he will have trained on and improved. His frame suggests he will get even better as a sprinter, despite not looking the full package last year. I’d like to hear that he’s bulked out even more to progress as a sprinter.
Hopefully he can kick things off with a win in this and he looks the strongest contender in this contest.
