13:30 Ascot – Obsidian Knight
I like Obsidian Knight’s chances. He’s drawn in stall 14 of 14 and while that might put people off, the outside stall isn’t a disadvantage at all. You just don’t want to be drawn low. He won last time out at Chelmsford and he’s only gone up 1lb in the handicap so his rating of 74 is very workable. Terry Kent is a great trainer and he’s done well with a small string in recent years.
13:50 Lingfield – True Legend
I’m not mad on this race but Aimeric is the correct favourite. I’m siding with True Legend because if you’re backing Aimeric after he beat Perfect Play, Mark Prescott’s runner also beat him at Ascot last year. He’s a better value pick.
14:05 Ascot – Mother Mary
Zouzanna has to be respected but I’m siding with Mother Mary for James Ferguson and Saffie Osborne. She’s unexposed and she’ll progress again. She ran over shorter trips before stepping up to a mile at Thirsk last year and she followed that up with a decent third at Pontefract. She’s had a run this season and although she finished eighth at Kempton, I’m happy to draw a line through that run. She’s on the same mark as her Pontefract run and she’s the most likely winner of this race.
14:25 Lingfield – Danielle
There are plenty of better races to be getting stuck into than this but if I had to give a token selection, I’d side with Danielle for John and Thady Gosden.
14:40 Ascot – Pearle d’Or
Tricast: Pearle d’Oor, Popmaster, Mostabshir
The horses drawn middle to high have the best chance and I’ve ended up on Pearle d’Or. He isn’t far away from likely pace angles and he should do well at Ascot, just like his trainer David O’Meara does in handicaps. He went without headgear last time out and it didn’t work out but he can improve on that. He was third over course and distance a couple of runs ago and he won over 7f at Newbury last year. He’s got plenty going for him.
15:00 Lingfield – Defiance
I’m not a big fan of horses coming out of stall one and that’s Illinois’ draw. I’m with Roger Varian’s Defiance as he’s got the best credentials for the Lingfield track on fast ground. He was a winner on his debut and he did well considering the circumstances when just beaten at Epsom last time out. He’ll step forward from that run.
15:15 Haydock – Lark In The Mornin (NAP)
Lark In The Mornin is a certainty. We’ve been told all year that he wants quick ground and he will get that at Haydock, which should bring out the best in him. I stopped looking at the other runners as soon as I saw his name!
15:35 Lingfield – Great Generation
I like Great Generation from stall nine. You want to be drawn high and close to the rail. She won her first two outings and she improved when fourth last time out behind Romantic Style at Deauville. That form has held up so I’m happy to side with her over Remarquee.
