1:30 Chester – Old Chums (each-way)

The Chester May meeting on ITV Racing gets underway here with a handicap over 6f. A wide-open contest. OLD CHUMS made his debut on heavy ground at Doncaster and then went on soft at Leicester before six runs on artificial. I doubt any rain will worry him but the ground is not expected to get soft at all and back on turf he’s interesting for Tom Dascombe and Pierre-Louis Jamin. The draw is ideal for a horse who can lead if connections want him to and a racing weight of 8st 5lb is perfect. An each-way chance.

1:50 Newton Abbot – Pepe Le Moko

ITV also include one race from Newton Abbot in the show which is this handicap chase over 2m5f. I suspect too much use was made of PEPE LE MOKO when he faded tamely at Kempton last time after a decent win at the same course. He was up 9lb for the defeat, but that wasn’t the difference and he wouldn’t have been beaten as far without a horror error at the last. Should have a good chance for David Noonan and Jane Williams.

2:05 Chester – Night In Paris (each-way)

Experience surely counts for much and while the draw is horrid I want to chance NIGHT IN PARIS eachway for Jamie Spencer and George Boughey. This 140,000gns purchase tried to make all on debut at Ripon and was just picked up close home. From stall 9 here, Spencer has to choose whether to bang out or drop in. Only he knows what he will do but, either way surely the daughter of No Nay Never has an eachway chance.

2:35 Chester – Knicks

KNICKS might prefer softer ground, but I like that he stays 6f and from a reasonable draw he might come home better than some. Joanna Mason, who has been in great form in 2024, takes the mount for Michael & David Easterby on a horse that was a fair second at Catterick last month.

3:05 Chester – Gallileo Dame

GALILEO DAME looked all about stamina when picking up the re-opposing Rubies Are Red at Leopardstown on seasonal debut and she might just outstay this field. Joseph O’Brien trains with Dylan McMonagle on top. It’s hard to see why Rubies will reverse the form and Lasting Love will have to settle to get the trip.

3:40 Chester – Hidden Law

HIDDEN LAW, related to strong stayers, looked a bit of a monster for Charlie Appleby and William Buick at Newbury having been narrowly beaten at Southwell on debut. The Newbury race might not have been the greatest event ever for the track, and the stable’s Natural World won it in 2022 and never scored again. But the runner-up that day was dual Earl of Sefton hero Ottoman Fleet so Hidden Law could still be decent for such a powerful operation.
