CLOUD KING didn’t trouble the judge in three relatively quick runs last season, but he was heavily backed on his return and handicap debut – had also been gelded – over this course and distance, and duly proved himself well ahead of his mark. The handicapper has raised him 12 lb for that success, but it was seriously impressive, and he looks like a horse to keep on the right side. Be Here Now is progressing nicely himself and rates the chief threat.
14:30 – Amerjeet
AMERJEET and Addictive have an experience edge, shaped with promise on their debuts. Preference is for the former, who started odds on for his debut at Wolverhampton earlier this month and showed plenty of ability. That form is working well and he looks like a sure-fire improver after that initial experience.
15:00 – High Order
HIGH ORDER has an attractive pedigree and has shown plenty to work on in his two starts so far. He bumped into another above-average type on his debut at Newcastle last year and he built on that promise when finishing third over a mile and a quarter at Newmarket on his return 11 days ago. That was a good race and he shaped as though he’ll relish this even longer trip. This looks like a good opportunity for him to open his account. Emaculate Soldier proved a different proposition to his debut 11 months on when second over course and distance eight weeks ago and is a clear next best.
15:35 – Pierrefonds
This doesn’t look like a deep handicap and PIERREFONDS arrives in good form, which counts for plenty at this level. He attracted support and ran with plenty of credit upped to a mile and three quarters for the first time when third at this course last time. He races from 1 lb lower now and this trip may suit him even better. Red Dwarf and Crazy Crackers head the dangers.
16:10 – Van Zant
VAN ZANT was beaten a neck by Masham Moor in a handicap over this course and distance 17 days ago, but he did well under the circumstances given he fared best of those up who raced up with the strong pace. He is slightly better off at the weights now and, under a more economical ride, he is expected to reverse that form. Jamie Spencer is an interesting booking for Eva Rosie and she also makes the shortlist.
16:40 – Makalu
MAKALU has gone fresh in the past, and he capitalized on a drop in grade when winning a classified event over course and distance on his return from six months off last month. He doesn’t look badly treated on the pick of his form now back in handicap company and is taken to follow up. Copper Mountain has a win and close second to her name over course and distance this year and is an obvious danger, while Star of St James is another who knows where the winning post is here and would be a threat to all if reviving with Silvestre de Sousa taking over the reins from a 7 lb claimer.
17:15 – Khamsin
The return to this trip promises to suit KHAMSIN, who is on a good mark judged on what he showed on his first two efforts in handicap company. David Simcock’s charge could be worth siding with in an open-looking contest, but Body Parts will be a threat if able to get back on track, while Twenty Bob is third choice ahead of Madame Christine.
17:45 – Two Past Eight
The suggestion in a wide-open staying handicap is TWO PAST EIGHT, who went down narrowly in first-time blinkers at Kempton last month and could have more to offer in this headgear from just a 1 lb higher mark. For Pleasure displayed a willing attitude when scoring at Chelmsford recently. He is just about second choice ahead of Young Endless, a decisive winner here earlier this month.
