13:15 Ayr – Pembroke

Another busy Saturday on ITV starting with a handicap chase over an extended 2m at Ayr. Not many of these have much in hand handicap-wise as most have been shoved up for recent wins. It might set up nicely for the down-in-trip PEMBROKE who has faced small fields all season and whose handicap mark hasn’t moved much. He ran a decent enough third at Kempton last time where he looked in need of this distance and jumped left which will be better here. He runs for trainer title chasing Dan Skelton and his brother jockey Harry.

13:30 Newbury – Arrest

Flat racing on ITV Saturday comes from Newbury beginning here with the Group 3 John Porter over 1m4f. Hamish is the one on paper, but he faces a big challenge in the younger ARREST for John & Thady Gosden and the excellent Kieren Shoemark. The St Leger runner-up can be slightly free, but he’s always oozed some class and has a huge chance in a belting renewal. I have always loved Chesspiece and expect him to run well too.

13:50 Ayr – Montgomery

A handicap chase over 3m where the handicapper might have got to MONTGOMERY but he remains in tremendous form and is a proven stayer which is not the case for all of these. Conditions are perfect for the Venetia Williams runner as he goes for the four-timer under Charlie Deutsch after wins at Bangor and Leicester.

14:05 Newbury – Regal Jubilee

Here’s a 1,000 Guineas trial in the Group Three Fred Darling over 7f. It will be fascinating to see how Relief Rally gets on over 7f. I’m hoping for another here for Kieren Shoemark and John & Thady Gosden with REGAL JUBILEE, who provided the new team with Listed success last season. She might need this as most of Gosden’s horses improve for a run, but she will stay stronger than most.

14:25 Ayr – Afadil

Up in class here for the Grade Two Scottish Champion Hurdle, a limited handicap over 2m. AFADIL has every chance for trainer title chaser Paul Nicholls after his good third at Aintree behind El Jefe. A slow start didn’t help that day but he got in contention three out and did well in the end. Freddie Gingell takes off a useful 5lb.

14:40 Newbury – Son (each-way)

Now the 2,000 Guineas trial in the Group Three Greenham Stakes over 7f. It is not a race that I think will have any bearing on Newmarket. As a Tottenham fan, it’s tempting to chance SON for Richard Hannon and Pat Dobbs. He may well try and make all and wasn’t disgraced in the Royal Lodge or over a mile at Salisbury last season. When he won at this track he looked useful.

15:00 Ayr – Phillapa Sue (each-way)

A handicap hurdle over an extended 3m. PHILLAPA SUE is one of the few proven stayers in this event and she might be reasonable odds for David Killahena & Grade McPherson after her win in a small field Market Rasen last time. She needs to jump better to progress but there’s no doubt she will keep plodding away. I will have an each-way poke.

15:15 Newbury – Bill Silvers (each-way)

A tough handicap in the Spring Cup over 1m. If there is a horse in here who might be better than their current handicap mark then it’s BILL SILVERS for Harry Eustace and Danny Tudhope. He’s only had four runs which is very rare in a race like this, but he looked good in a win at Doncaster and back at that track was a fair third in a handicap over 1m2f. A strongly-run mile with juice in the ground might be what he wants, and there should still be more to come. I’ll take an each-way chance on him.

15:35 Ayr – My Silver Lining (each-way)

The big betting race of the day in the Scottish Grand National over 4m. Having banged you in the Grand National hero I Am Maximus las week,  this should be easy! MY SILVER LINING should have won at Haydock and Uttoxeter on her last two starts, but she got to the front too soon and got picked up. I think James Best would agree with that, and I’m sure he will hold on to the brilliant Warwick winner longer on this occasion. Her jumping is a joy and she stays well. She’s up another 2lb for defeat last time but the racing weight of 10st 3lb is perfect. What a horse she has been this season, having gone twenty-one miles since October. An each-way chance and a credit to Emma Lavelle.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
