14:10 Butcher Hollow
Bumper winner BUTCHER HOLLOW has made an encouraging start over hurdles, finishing placed on his three starts in this sphere, and he gets the vote here. He was third at Naas when last seen in January but he shaped second best for much of the way, disputing the lead until the last, and can perhaps have that effort upgraded slightly. A tongue tie is fitted in a bid to bring out a bigger effort, while it’s notable that Paul Townend takes over in the saddle.
14:45 Ferns Lock
FERNS LOCK failed to meet expectations in the hunter chase at Cheltenham after proving fractious at the start and then refusing to settle in the race. However, he’s much better than he showed on that occasion and the form of his two previous efforts this season set a tall standard for his rivals to aim at. He was an impressive eight-length winner at Thurles on his penultimate start and can outclass these rivals back in a calmer environment.
15:20 Queen Jane
QUEEN JANE posted a highly encouraging comeback when only narrowly denied in a two-and-a-half-mile handicap chase here in December, and she has had excuses for her two subsequent defeats. She made an early mistake and was later brought down at the fourth last at Limerick on her penultimate start, while she failed to stay over a much longer trip at Punchestown last month and was pulled up. She should benefit from this drop in trip and it would be no surprise to see her bounce back.
15:55 Read To Return
READ TO RETURN was disappointing over hurdles when last seen three months ago but his yard is in better form now than was the case for his latest start. Read To Return was an impressive winner of a Beginners Chase at Killarney in October and then shaped like he should have won when storming home in fifth in an amateur jockeys’ handicap at Cheltenham the following month. He remains potentially well-treated over fences and can get back on the up.
16:30 Olympic Man
OLYMPIC MAN had to settle for minor honours on his first couple of starts for Willie Mullins after returning from a long absence, but he ran out a comprehensive winner at Naas a few weeks ago, drawing clear from the home turn while still hard held. Clumsy jumping had cost him at Galway on his penultimate start and he still failed to impress with his jumping at Naas last time, but he is blessed with a good deal of ability and, still unexposed, he may well prove better than an opening mark of 131.
17:05 Comfort Zone
COMFORT ZONE took well to hurdling last season, winning three of his four starts over jumps, including a couple of Grade 2s in the Finale at Chepstow and the Finesse at Cheltenham. He ran well when runner-up in a Flat handicap when last seen in September and remains with potential as he goes over jumps, with a mark of 132 looking potentially lenient based on what he showed in juvenile events last season.
17:40 Flashway
FLASHAWAY is out of the very smart mare Voler la Vedette and she looked above average herself when making a winning start in good style at Gowran Park last month. Flashaway was able to dictate a steady gallop but there was a lot to like about how she picked up in the straight to power ten lengths clear. She is open to plenty of improvement in a race run at a better tempo.
