15:05 Doncaster – Blind Beggar

This looks competitive for the level with the veteran Bernardo O’Reilly well handicapped on plenty of his form over the past season and a half and suited by the conditions. Aleezdancer beat Blind Beggar over the course and distance last April by two and a half lengths and the tip is now only a pound better off, but he comes here match fit having raced six times from November through to last month and although his last two starts have been underwhelming, he will surely appreciate the give under foot on turf and looks worth an each-way shout at the prices.

Wobwobwob is only 3lbs higher than for absolutely bolting up in the Ayr Silver Cup and should run well if fitness isn’t a problem, but the biggest danger to the pick has to be Chairmanoftheboard. The now eight-year-old was a huge eye-catcher in the aforementioned race finishing 8th of the 19 runners in midfield, but was given quite a tender time in the closing stages after things didn’t pan out his way early on.

He has been placed off this mark recently and is now 3lbs lower than his last winning rating. If Charles Bishop can get him covered up and into a nice rhythm he could be well worth a saver.

15:10 Naas – Sluice

I thought that this was the most fascinating race of the day, with 12 three-year-olds running over this stiff seven furlongs and with several of the leading protagonists taking a change in distance. Neo Smart finally fulfilled his earlier promised by landing a Dundalk maiden in November and isn’t badly treated here off a mark of 81, while the Siyouni colt, Military Race, who looked green on three outings last season, could be a totally different proposition this year even though the handicapper has taken no chance giving Aidan’s O’Brien’s charge an opening mark of 100.

However, he may struggle to give the weight away to the filly Sluice, who was considered good enough to run in the Group Three Killavullan Stakes by Joseph O’Brien last year and was far from disgraced behind Atlantic Coast. She too looked in need of that experience after bolting up on her career debut at Down Royal and although that race hardly looks red hot, Joseph obviously put her away after just two starts so she could strengthen and mature. She looks an interesting player here.

15:55 Ascot – Macs Legacy

It will interesting to see how A Definite Getaway is in the market place following a long time on the sidelines as he has always looked as though this kind of test on decent ground would suit him. However, there are several less exposed sorts further down the weights that look even more interesting particularly those taking a step up to three miles for the first time.

Strackan is nicely weighted here if you ignore his last run and like many this will be his first opportunity to run on good ground, but the one I was really keen on here was the Rebecca Curtis-trained runner Macs Legacy. This strong looking son of Fame and Glory produced a career best on good ground when a strong finishing second to Major Fortune at Hereford and then floundered on a much deeper surface on his return to the square shaped track.

But that form looks strong as his conqueror then went onto win off marks of 88, 95 and 101 and the selection gets to run off 93 here with a light weight on his back in real terms. Several of the stables’ horses have been running much better of late and in a race with plenty of chaff and little wheat in it, the seven-year-old can make the most of his mark here.

16:50 Doncaster – Thornaby Pearl

There looks to be an abundance of pace on in this first division of this, low grade, five furlong handicap and it could be worth looking at the midfield and hold-up charges here to pick up the pieces and the Adrian Nicholls’ charge Thornaby Pearl fits the bill. The six-year-old has yet to win at the minimum distance, but has run some good races at five furlongs most notably when three and a half lengths off Rayong at Pontefract and then a length and three quarters behind the well handicapped Jordan Electrics at Carlisle.

Well below the marks he ran off in those two races (66), he could be ready to pounce late on as the pace collapses. Of his rivals, top weight Harry’s Halo and outsider Prospect look interesting at the prices. The last named won and was placed off 68 last season and now finds himself off 63 here with Paul Mulrennan booked and he could well be the mover in the early price market if fit and ready following a 186 day break.
