1.35 Kempton – Beau Balko

This race has an unusual set-up in that all five of the declared runners are hold-up horses, some cemented more in that roll more than others. Issar d’Airy only just scraped home at Newbury last time out and a career high mark of 128 could well deny him the hat-trick here. Soul Icon’s jumping is hap hazard to say the least which means that the Paul Nicholls’ charge gets the vote. He has a high cruising speed and I am sure that he is better than his current mark of 127 as long as he settles in this scenario.

1.50 Uttoxeter – Monviel

All the races this afternoon at the Midlands’ track will be shaped by the heavy going and this two and a half mile handicap hurdle has several mud lovers among the nine runners with the selection set to get his ground for the first time in a long time. He ran a fair race behind JPR One on his chasing debut, but then was done for toe on both subsequent outings at Ascot, the latter overb hurdles. Castle Rushen has promised much but simply not delivered so Jagwar could be the main danger. Jonjo’s charge beat Clovis Island (winner since) at Carlisle and remains unexposed.

2.10 Kempton – Boombawn

Most of these were not rated high enough to get into the big handicap hurdles at Cheltenham. Irish Hill went out like a light at Ascot last time out after looking a big danger two out. This is undoubtedly easier and Harry Cobden takes over from Freddie Gingell. However, with the Skelton handicappers carrying all before them, there may well be some mileage in backing Boombawn after a long break. In the hope that there is not too much rain at the Sunbury-On-Thames track, he gets the vote over the Nicholls’ runner and the consistent Good Luck Charm.

2.25 Uttoxeter – Lord Snootie

Saint Davy has the scope to improve again on his recent Sandown Park success, but to my eyes he will need to hurdle better to be involved again and is first and foremost a lovely chaser in the making. The Christian Williams’ trained selection finally got his ground for the first time this season when finishing strongly behind Cuthbert Dibble (third in the Pertemps on Thursday at Cheltenham) at Haydock Park last month. Set to race off a 3lbs higher mark, he has solid claims and should see off his market rival and lively outsider Minella Blueway.

2.45 Kempton – Lord Baddesley

With light rain forecast throughout the afternoon, course specialist Flegmatik may have his work cut out to improve his figures at the track off a mark of 140. There are plenty of alternatives to the Skelton charge and with the promise of plenty of pace in the race, Chris Gordon’s charge can reverse recent form with the likely market leader. He has to be hunted in rear through the race with his slick jumping a huge asset. I expect the nine-year-old to cut down his rivals down the home stretch off what looks a very fair mark of 131.

3.00 Uttoxeter – Guetapan Collonges

The lung bursters come to play in this Midlands’ National and top weight Mr Incredible certainly has claims on a going day. He was travelling supremely well until a leather broke after the Canal Turn second time around in the Grand National. This could merely be a warm up for the return to Liverpool and the percentage call against him has to be Charlie Longsdon’s charge who is made for this four and a quarter mile test. He is taken to reverse Warwick Classic form with My Silver Lining on 10lbs better terms.

3.35 Uttoxeter – Evies Vladimir

This three mile novices’ handicap chase is arguably the most open of the televised races and looks a competitive renewal. I still want to see The Changing Man return to two and a half miles, while a mark of 123 may stop Val Dancer completing a four timer. The nod goes to the Irish raider who found the two and a half miles of a listed handicap at Naas way too sharp. This test will suit the gelding a whole lot better and his solid jumping should stand him in good stead in the TV finale.
