13:50 Ascot – Brave Kingdom
This is a tough race to find a solid bet in. Apple Away should take the beating. Her second at Warwick last time was better than the result suggested. Brave Kingdom looks a tough enough contender and his win at Newbury in December was decent. He’s probably slightly overpriced but I’m not sure I’m desperate to back him!
14:05 Wincanton – Colonel Mustard
I put Colonel Mustard up a couple of years ago at Cheltenham and he was beaten by State Man, which looks good now! This is his trip and Lorna Fowler has opted to run him here – and he gets 6lbs from the favourite Rubaud. I’m confident he can get the better of Paul Nicholls’ runner, who has Lorcan Williams on board instead of Harry Cobden.
14:25 Ascot – Bad
I like the look of Bad for Ben Jones and Ben Pauling. His third at Ascot last time out was decent and he found the ground a little too quick. He’s had wind surgery since then and he’s up in trip with cheekpieces on. I don’t have a problem with his attitude and there’s a lot to like about him.
14:40 Haydock – Botox Has
Botox Has will win this if he’s back to the form he showed when winning at Wetherby on his seasonal reappearance in November. He’s a course and distance winner and if he can avoid any big mistakes, he will win. He doesn’t need to improve to win this.

15:00 Ascot – Torn And Frayed
I’ve been going round and round with this race. There are problems with basically all of the runners and I kept coming back to Torn And Frayed for Sam and Nigel Twiston-Davies. He’s ran in decent races recently and he hasn’t had many chances to show what he can do. The handicapper has given him a chance and he’s off a mark of 132 in a weaker race than what he’s used to. I’ll take a chance on him.
15:15 Haydock – Iron Bridge
Jonjo O’Neill is in fine form and four of his last five runners have won. His strike rate is brilliant at the moment so I’m on Iron Bridge. He’s very well handicapped and he comes into this on the back of his impressive second behind Nassalam in the Welsh National at Chepstow over Christmas. He needs to win this for the Grand National to be a genuine target.
15:36 Ascot – Ahoy Senor
I like LHomme Presse and the question is whether Venetia Williams’ runner can repeat his comeback run in January. I’m taking a chance on Ahoy Senor and I’ve already backed him! He’s overpriced and he was an eyecatcher last time out at Cheltenham with a tack problem causing issues. He’s shown improvement and he’s worth getting behind at the prices, although LHomme Presse could be the most likely winner.
