      13:50 Ascot – Kilbeg King

Kilbeg King is rated 1lb higher than Apple Away, who is the favourite, but a horse I’d be keen enough to take on. She’s getting the mares allowance and is a Grade 1 winner but I’d rather be against her at the prices.

Kilbeg King came to Punchestown Festival last spring and won one of the big handicap hurdles which shows his class albeit off a mark of 126. However, he’s been running in deep contests over fences. He was behind Iroko on his chase debut and a distant third in the Kauto Star but only 3.5l behind Hermes Allen that day.

He’s a horse that’ll appreciate a stamina test like this and at the prices, he’s the one I’ll be siding with.

      14:05 Wincanton – Colonel Mustard

This was a trappy enough race to price up antepost. Rubaud is the obvious one to beat on paper but the ground is going to be testing and I’m not sure if he wants it.

He’s mostly been campaigned on better ground and usually I can take that to mean the trainer is actively looking for it, especially during the winter. He came from France and was well beaten on soft ground as well so the concern is definitely there if you’re planning on taking a short price about him.

Colonel Mustard returns back over hurdles after having a tough time of it chasing. He was down the field to Hermes Allen last time out and put in a good run behind Found a Fifty at Down Royal. His hurdle form is fairly good and he probably hasn’t been the best campaigned going up the weights without winning.

He was behind Rubaud in the Scottish Champion Hurdle last year but that was on good ground. I can see him reversing here on heavy ground.

        14:25 Ascot – Monviel

Monviel had brilliant form last season for Philip Hobbs and he then moved to Harry Derham. Harry should be able to improve him and they sent him chasing this season and he’s gone off short enough prices proving he’s showing them something at home anyway.

He was second to JPR One on his debut and was then well beaten at Ascot last time out. He returns back over hurdles for the first time this season off a mark of 128 which looks extremely workable.

        14:40 Haydock – Butch

This is a hard enough race but I priced this antepost and liked Butch then and I still like him now. He us by Kayf Tara and always looked the type that wants bad ground and 3m, which is what he is going to get now.

All his form is solid without setting the world alight but he’s entitled to improve with racing and he’s got the perfect set up here for an Olly Murphy stable that’s in form.

        15:00 Ascot – Victtorino

I put Victtorino up last time at Cheltenham off this same mark. He is a twice course and distance winner. The market thought there was scope off that mark at Cheltenham.

The Venetia Williams yard is a bit quiet but she has a good record with these type of horses and he’s still only six years old.

I’m giving him another chance back at a course and distance he has had plenty of success at.
