We have no Warwick as the rain has claimed that one, but we do still have a very competitive card at Newbury which is highlighted by the Betfair Hurdle.
13.30 Newbury – Emitom
I thought long and hard about this contest and I struggled between two horses in the race at the front of the betting as Emitom and Kyntara are tough to split. Kyntara should have won at Warwick. Slowing down into the last hurdle and then stumbling ultimately cost him. Emitom bumped into Saint Davy at Ludlow and that one won on ITV last week so the form is strong. I may well do the forecast!
14.05 Newbury – Shishkin
If you had seen me when Shishkin stumbled and unseated Nico de Boinville at Kempton, you would’ve seen a very beaten man. I had backed him at 8/1 for the King George, only to watch him unseat his rider with the race at his mercy. That’s racing though and you would love to see him win here to get back on track. Protektorat is the obvious danger having chased home a Gold Cup candidate in L’Homme Presse at Lingfield last time out.

14.40 Newbury – Edwardstone
It was just too far and Edwardstone was too keen last time. He hasn’t pulled that hard in a race since his early days. What he needs is a strong pace and with this contest he is guaranteed that with lots of forward-going horses. He will love the conditions and this is the ideal contest for him.
15.15 Newbury – Iberico Lord
I think the heavy ground is the key. Ocastle Des Mottes could be absolutely thrown in at the weights as his Irish rating is 6lbs higher than his UK one. The only worry is it’s his first run over British style hurdles and he is not guaranteed to love them. If he takes to them – and you will know after the first few – then he will take some stopping.
Iberico Lord was very disappointing at Ascot. It is very different ground here though and has to be feared on his Cheltenham win. Altobelli is another who has a chance based on his second to Luccia at Ascot. He will love conditions too. Brentford Hope is a good each-way play in here as the ground is perfect and with cheekpieces on, it means he will travel into it strongly.
15.50 Newbury – Inch House
Inch House, the Jonjo O’Neill-trained runner, was a very comfy winner at the track when winning the Sir Peter O’Sullevan race so he has lots of positives about his chances in this contest.
