Betfair Hurdle tips and runner-by-runner guide to Newbury 3.15 on Saturday

A bumper field take their chance!

Betfair Hurdle

Willie Mullins hands a stable debut to Ocastle Des Mottes in his bid to win the prestigious Betfair Hurdle for the first time in his training career.

The five-year-old will be sporting the double green colours of owners Simon Munir and Isaac Souede for the first time after being bought in the wake of a lucrative hurdle victory in France last June.

Ocastle Des Mottes is joined by stablemates Alvaniy and Onlyamatteroftime in taking place in the maximum field of 24 runners in Saturday’s 15:15 at Newbury, which boasts a prize pot worth £155,000.

British trainer Nicky Henderson saddles four runners – Greatwood scorer Iberico Lord, Betfair Exchange Trophy heroine Luccia, C&D scorer Under Control and Doddiethegreat.

Gerry Feilden third Brentford Hope also boasts C&D form, Lookaway should have the stamina for a strong pace after placing second in the Challow, while Altobelli has been consistent in handicaps this term.

Betfair Hurdle verdict

Timeform: Plenty with chances but progressive ex-French winner OCASTLE DES MOTTES rates a most interesting recruit for the all-conquering Willie Mullins’ yard and looks the way to go. Nicky Henderson saddles four and his lightly-raced Iberico Lord could prove the pick and emerge as the chief threat to the selection ahead of the likeable Lookaway and improving Spirit d’Aunou. Our Champ and Brentford Hope all need factoring into this typically ultra competitive Betfair Hurdle too.

Betfair Hurdle runners and riders

The following horses have been declared for the Betfair Hurdle 2024.

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: David Bass Age: 6 Weight: 12st 0lbs

C&D scorer who resumed winning ways in 9-runner handicap hurdle at Ascot (15.7f, good) 49 days ago. All out there but he remains with relatively few miles on the clock so can go well again.

Spirit D’Aunou

Trainer: Gary Moore Jockey: Caoilin Quinn Age: 5 Weight: 11st 13lbs

Very progressive sort who made it 5 wins in in his last 6 starts when seeing off 9 rivals over 2m at Sandown (heavy) last time. Raised 10 lb but that latest form has been boosted and there’s almost certainly more to come.

Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Miss Heidi Palin Age: 9 Weight: 11st 11lbs

Talented hurdler/chaser who capitalised on much-reduced mark when landing the County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival last March. Beat only one in handicap hurdle at Ascot (15.7f, good) 49 days ago but in the mix if back on his A-game.

Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Liam Harrison Age: 8 Weight: 11st 11lbs

Impressive when making a winning reappearance at Ascot in November. Possibly found the race coming too soon at Cheltenham 15 days later, so he could bounce back for top yard.

Trainer: Neil King Jockey: Jack Quinlan Age: 7 Weight: 11st 11lbs

Likeable sort who is progressing well over hurdles, completing a hat-trick in Cheltenham Grade 2 in October and posting an excellent second in Newbury’s Challow Hurdle last time. Player returned to handicap company.

Under Control

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: Jonjo O’Neill Jr. Age: 5 Weight: 11st 11lbs

C&D winner who resumed from a wind op with a good second of 6 to Ashroe Diamond in Yorkshire Rose Mares’ Hurdle at Doncaster (16.6f, good) 14 days ago. Must enter calculations back in handicaps.

Trainer: Ben Pauling Jockey: Non Runner Age: 5 Weight: 11st 9lbs

Non Runner.

Brentford Hope

Trainer: Harry Derham Jockey: Paul O’Brien Age: 7 Weight: 11st 8lbs

Bordering on smart on the Flat and easily bagged a third success over hurdles for current yard in C&D handicap in November. Posted another good effort when third here last time so he’s well in the mix with cheekpieces added.

Iberico Lord

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: Nico de Boinville Age: 6 Weight: 11st 8lbs

Has made giant strides since undergoing wind surgery, landing Greatwood at Cheltenham on return. Unsuited by way race developed when seventh of 9 to stablemate Luccia in handicap at Ascot (15.7f, good) 49 days ago and remains with potential.

Ocastle Des Mottes

Trainer: W. P. Mullins Jockey: D. E. Mullins Age: 5 Weight: 11st 7lbs

Much improved once sent handicapping for Gabriel Leenders in France and bagged 2m2f handicap at Auteuil when last seen out in June. Starts out now with top yard with more to offer. Most interesting.

Trainer: Nicky Henderson Jockey: James Bowen Age: 8 Weight: 11st 6lbs

Made light of a 2-year absence when extending his unbeaten record under Rules to 4 in 2m Ascot conditions race in November. Good second of 12 to Go Dante in handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (16.8f, good to soft) 57 days ago so he ought to be in the shake-up.

Aurigny Mill

Trainer: Victor Dartnall Jockey: Alan Johns Age: 7 Weight: 11st 6lbs

Arrives on a hat-trick after taking 2m handicaps at Wincanton and Kempton this winter. Up another 9 lb but he’s not taken lightly in his current mood.

Trainer: Fergal O’Brien Jockey: J. Hogan Age: 7 Weight: 11st 6lbs

Made an impressive start over hurdles when landing Worcester novice in October and added to that in Haydock Grade 2 following month. Only sixth of 9 in Formby Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree (16.5f, heavy) 46 days ago but sort to bounce back now handicapping.

Trainer: Harry Fry Jockey: Jonathan Burke Age: 6 Weight: 11st 6lbs

Won a bumper and maiden/novice hurdles on first 3 starts last term and has taken his form up a level when placed in 2m Ascot handicap hurdles this winter. One for the shortlist.

L’Eau Du Sud

Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Harry Skelton Age: 6 Weight: 11st 3lbs

Useful hurdler in France and made a positive start in handicaps for this yard last season, third at Kempton over Christmas then filling the same position in Morebattle at Kelso in March. Off 9 months/had wind surgery before pulled up at Cheltenham on his return though so needs to bounce back.

Go Dante

Trainer: Olly Murphy Jockey: Sean Bowen Age: 8 Weight: 11st 3lbs

Lightly raced 7-y-o who built on reappearance promise when taking 12-runner handicap hurdle at Cheltenham (16.8f, good to soft) 57 days ago by 1¼ lengths from Doddiethegreat. Can make his presence felt.

Norman Fletcher

Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies Age: 5 Weight: 11st 0lbs

Is going the right way over hurdles, following up his victory at Market Rasen with a game success at Aintree (17f). Good second under a double penalty in novice at Haydock (15.6f, heavy) 42 days ago. Not to be underestimated on his handicap bow.

Trainer: David Pipe Jockey: Jack Tudor Age: 5 Weight: 10st 13lbs

Ran poorly at Sandown last time but had been in good form prior to that, including Ascot second over 2m off this mark in November. Capable of bouncing back.

Our Champ

Trainer: Chris Gordon Jockey: Freddie Gordon Age: 6 Weight: 10st 12lbs

Looked firmly on the up when winning 2m handicaps at Plumpton and Cheltenham on first 2 outings for Chris Gordon. Only a fair third at Kempton last time though but handily weighted if a wind op (also tongue tied) sparks improvement.

Moveit Like Minnie

Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies Jockey: Finn Lambert Age: 7 Weight: 10st 12lbs

Posted significant improvement when winning 2m handicaps at Ludlow and Huntingdon and came in a solid fourth of 9 to Luccia in handicap at Ascot (15.7f, good) 49 days ago. Can give another good account off an unchanged mark.

Trainer: W. P. Mullins Jockey: Bryony Frost Age: 6 Weight: 10st 11lbs

Placed on both starts in bumpers for Paul Gammell and got off the mark in 2m maiden hurdle at Galway in September. Has twice failed to build on it since, hooded when sixth in 12m4f Wetherby handicap last time, but in excellent hands and remains with potential.

Trainer: Gary Moore Jockey: Niall Houlihan Age: 6 Weight: 10st 11lbs

Finished a fine fourth in this contest 12 months ago but has refused to race on his last two starts, tried in a visor at Kempton on latter occasion. One to leave alone.

Ito Ditto

Trainer: Nicky Martin Jockey: Sean Houlihan Age: 6 Weight: 10st 9lbs

Has returned much improved this term and went 2-3 in 13-runner novice hurdle at Chepstow (16f, soft) 45 days ago. Well on top at the finish there so he’s much respected back in handicap company.

Trainer: Nigel Hawke Jockey: James Davies Age: 6 Weight: 10st 7lbs

Going the right way over hurdles and resumed winning ways in 8-runner handicap hurdle at Warwick (16f, soft) 28 days ago. Enters calculations despite having a career-high mark to overcome.

Trainer: W. P. Mullins Jockey: B. Hayes Age: 8 Weight: 10st 3lbs

Bumper winner for Niall Madden but he’s twice ran out since, including on his debut for current yard at Cheltenham. Not discredited when sixth of 9 to Luccia in handicap hurdle at Ascot (15.7f, good) 49 days ago but needs to build on it now. RESERVE.
