Betfair Hurdle 2024 trends and stats for Newbury 3.15 on Saturday

Lookaway

A bumper field of runners are set to take their chance in this year’s Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

The Premier Handicap is a notoriously tricky puzzle to solve and Saturday’s 15:15 looks like being another competitive contest as a slew of horses bring high-class form and tempting marks to the table.

Incredibly, five winners of the Betfair Hurdle in the last 10 years went off at a double-digit starting price so there could be value in Paddy Power’s betting market.

Betfair Hurdle odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key trends from the last 10 renewals and a tip based off the big-race stats are below.

Betfair Hurdle trends

AGE

The last 10 winners of the Betfair Hurdle were aged five to seven. You can already put a line through four runners – Doddiethegreat, Faivoir, Go Dante and Knickerbockerglory.

COURSE FORM

Just five winners since 2014 had previous experience of racing at Newbury, while just one of those (Ballyandy, 2017) had scored at the track. Brentford Hope, Lookaway and Luccia are three that bring course form into the race.

DISTANCE FORM

A fair bit of experience over the trip is required as eight of the last 10 winners boasted at least five previous runs over 1m7f to 2m1f under the hooves. The same number had already won over the distance at least twice in their careers.

GRADED FORM

A lack of experience at the higher levels of the game is far from important as just two winners in the last 10 years had a Grade 1-3 success on their CV.

LAST TIME OUT

Nine of the last 10 winners had run within the last 65 days, although winning form is not important as only one horse in that period had a 1 next to their name for their previous outing.

ODDS

As the Betfair Hurdle is a big-field handicap, it is hardly surprising that only four winners since 2014 could be found in the top three in Paddy Power’s betting. Willie Mullins’ debutant Ocastle Des Mottes heads the market after final declarations.

RATING

You want to be looking for a horse rated 133 or higher by the BHA handicapper as nine of the last 10 winners met this trend. Interestingly, only the first 10 on the racecard have this mark or higher.

SEASON FORM

Nine of the last 10 winners had three runs or more under their hooves for the campaign, with seven of those having already got on the scoreboard.

WEIGHT

The top-rated horse in the handicap has not won any of the last 10 renewals, with the lowest-winning weight being 10st 3lbs (Splash Of Ginge, 2014) and the highest being 11st 8lbs (Glory And Fortune, 2022; Al Dancer, 2019).

Betfair Hurdle 2024 trends verdict

There is not a single horse in the field that hits all the trends, although the closest to completing the set is the Neil King-trained LOOKAWAY, who could continue the run of seven-year-olds emerging victorious.
