Rory Delargy’s Mares Hurdle Antepost Tips:
Brighterdaysahead
In the second of this year’s Paddy Power Media’s ‘From The Horse’s Mouth’ podcast ‘Cheltenham Countdown’, host Tom Nugent together with former champion jockey turned tv pundit Ruby Walsh and well-known journalist and broadcaster Rory Delargy, look at the Mares Hurdle on day one of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.
RORY DELARGY
It looks a wide open renewal of the Mares Hurdle at this stage. We haven’t seen the top two in the market – Lossiemouth and Gala Marceau – this season yet and until they show they’ve progressed from four to five year olds, it’s hard to know.
Traditionally, it’s not been a great race for five-year-old either – the wonder mare Quevega and Apple’s Jade being the exceptions. Honeysuckle brought the house down last year when beating Love Envoi, but the others never really got into it.
There’s no Honeysuckle this year but Love Envoi seems vulnerable now. No mare has won this contest after winning the mares novice hurdle the previous season and that may count against Maries Rock, more so for her performances this season, that the stats counting against her. She looks vulnerable at Grade One level and needs to do a little more.
One that I want to keep an eye on – and am happy to back at lower odds when we get to non-runner money back stage is the Gordon Elliott-trained Brighterdaysahead. She’s only had two runs over hurdles and badly needed them for the experience, even though she won them. Her jumping hasn’t been great but she looks to have a huge engine.

She was good in bumpers last season but was minded and could be a star in a couple of years. It’s expecting a lot of her now at the price to turn up in a Championship race like this, but if the indications are there she will run I’d be happy to back her in the non-runner money back market soon. She excites me most in the race.
