Kelso 13:20 – CARRIGEEN KALI

Several of these young horses are stepping up significantly in trip and so it would logically follow that any amount of improvement remains in their lockers. Many of you will quite rightly be interested in the stoutly bred Nab Wood following his three runs over the minimum trip. His last start was particularly eye catching as the Nicky Richards’ trained runner was hugely keen initially when racing out the back and wasn’t given an overly hard time in the closing stages by Sean Quinlan as he gradually cut the winner’s lead down to two and a half lengths at the line. I make him the biggest danger over Choose A Copper to Carrigeen Kali.

The daughter of Soldier of Fortune looks all stamina judged on two of her starts at Hexham and Carlisle and the extra quarter of a mile looks sure to bring out more improvement. She gets a massive 9lbs from the Richards’ charge and that may be the tipping point here.

Kelso 15:20 – JET LEGS

A relatively small field for this feature race on the card and several of the seven runners have been hugely disappointing of late and as a consequence of that have fallen to attractive handicap marks. That observation applies massively to Ciel de Neige who not so long ago was a close up seventh in a class B handicap chase at Leopardstown and then sixth of 22, off a rating of 147 in the Galway Plate, beaten some 14 lengths.

Three miles around here off 140 may well be the answer for the nine-year-old on his 12th chase start. If there is money for the JP McManus charge I will be having a saver on JET LAGS who is firmly on the upgrade, but needs to continue that roll up against better if untrustworthy horses in a better race.

All ground comes alike to this young chaser and his light weight will count for plenty on the prevailing heavy ground. Red Happy is similarly progressive, but three miles on deep ground asks plenty of questions although on his form in the past 12 months he remains fairly weighted despite having gone up 15lbs in the handicap.

Lingfield 15:30 – SPLIT ELEVENS

A competitive race at this Class 6 level and the likes of top weight and course and distance winner Edmund Ironside, Blue Collar Lad and 7F Course winner, So Chic firmly in the mix.

However, in a race where there a two front runners and no less than six pressers this could be set up for the John Butler trained charge Split Elevens. His record on a sand surface reads only five wins from 34 starts, but it is worth noting that the six-year-old has hit the bar on many occasions with three seconds and an amazing  eight third places to his name. That is probably because of his run style as he is a confirmed hold-up performer who needs to be covered up in his races. However, with a bundle of pace on here I suspect he will once again be flying at the finish and if the gaps open up the gelding can take advantage of a mark of 56, some 6lbs lower than for his last success.
