15:57 – Celtic Revival

A 1m 4f handicap to kick-start the second half of the season at Dundalk after the Christmas break. Course specialist Celtic Revival is looking for his sixth course and distance win. He’ll be in the frame for a statue at Dundalk if the five-year-old can keep up his winning ways at this venue.

16:10 – Eddie G

A 6f handicap where Eddie G was the one for money last time in a maiden and makes his first start in a handicap. A stalls’ malfunction hindered his chance that day as the eventual winner had flown from the gates. He can gain compensation now. The Poacher Daly should be competitive but could do with a drop in the weights.

    16:45 – Volatile Analyst

The long sprint over 7f sees a full field of 14 runners declared and Adrian McGuinness has two live chances. The pace is going to be key here and I’m hoping it will suit McGuinneses Volatile Analyst who is a dual winner over 7f in the UK and steps up to that distance for the first time for Aido McGuinness. He has the perfect set-up to get off the mark in Ireland. Western Cape is one to watch over the next couple months but may need to drop down in grade to strike.

    17:15 – Nerano (NAP) & Nedita (each-way)

Nerano attracted a fair bit of money on debut before finishing third and sets the standard. Trainer Joseph O’Brien has three debutants but they’d need to be smart to match any normal improvement from Nerano. A decent draw in stall 5 will help too. The Bear Trap should be winning races in the future and Nedita (each-way) has shown glimpses of form and should be winning races when dropping to handicap company.

        17:45 – Beautiful Dawn

Beautiful Dawn is one of three Joseph O’Brien runners but could be vulnerable to something else, as his debut run was only a fair effort. He’s just a tentative pick. Johnny Murtagh’s Timana and Michael Halford’s & Tracey Collins’ Mm Dragonfly are two interesting three-year-old newcomers. They’ve been given time to reach the racetrack and any market support for either should be noted.

        18:15 – Cousin Shay

A one mile 47-65 handicap where a lot of the field need a return to form. Boskill Marie makes her handicap debut and looks to have something to work with off a mark of 63, but stall 16 has done her no favours. Snag It should be suited by the one mile trip and likes to race forward. He has held his form well and should be ok from stall 13. Trainer John McConnell’s Cousin Shay is a former course winner who is lightly raced and is down 11lbs from his last win at this track. He ran well last time and a good draw in stall three should help him to get some cover behind the leaders and he makes a lot of appeal. There are a couple of reserves who could have a big say on proceedings if they get in.

        18:45 – Cherry Pink

Another mile handicap where the front-runner Airgead can get competitive, but he’s a quirky customer so I’m happy enough to watch him this time. Cherry Pink makes a lot of appeal from stall five. She ran well over 7f with the blinkers on here last month. She’s got an extra furlong to deal with now but if travelling strongly behind the speed, this restricted riders’ race could suit her. Nyla Rua and Kudbegood are two who can take steps forwards to better things in the future.

        19:15 – Scatchwah

The night ends with a 1m 2f maiden where the Squire Danagher sets a good standard. I’m happy to take him on though, with Sheila Lavery’s runner Scatchwah. He hasn’t been seen since Navan last May and if overcoming that absence, could go well on a surface he’s bed for. Watch the market and see how he goes as could be an improver-in-waiting. Dawn Rider from the Joseph O’Brien yard was second over course and distance on her penultimate start and if returning to that type of form, has a chance.
