Paddy Power Media’s ‘From The Horse’s Mouth’ podcast ‘Cheltenham Countdown’ has returned.

Host Tom Nugent is with former champion jockey turned tv pundit Ruby Walsh and well-known journalist and broadcaster Rory Delargy – and they’re looking at the Cross Country Chase on day two of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival.

Gordon Elliott has made the Cross Country Chase his own in the past few seasons with Tiger Roll and Delta Work winning five of the last six editions. He’ll be well represented again with last year’s first and second Delta Work and Galvin likely to be joined by Conflated. All are of similar ability.

It’s hard to know who will come out on top as there was barely two and a half lengths between the pair last season and it may come down to who is better suited to the ground on the day.

Delta Work handles softer ground better, Galvin would like better ground but it’s hard to determine who will get what, 10 weeks out.

Latenightpass was a good second in November over the cross country course and then won well at the same discipline in December with Minella Indo fourth and Galvin back in fifth. Those two contest were both handicaps though and Latenightpass faces a bigger challenge in March when running against the same opponents off level weights.

We’ve seen in the past though that horses who take to this discipline often improve. Latenightpass can’t be easily dismissed, but still has something to prove against ex-Grade One performers.

Minella Indo impressed me on his last run. He was carrying 12 stone, raced wide and despite slipping on the bend – still managed to finish fourth.

I was impressed. Minella Indo looks the best of this lot for March’s renewal.
